Naked bike, 161 hp, from 10,000 euros

The BMW S 1000 R is a popular sporty naked bike with an extensive, but not really cheap, second-hand offer.

BMW S 1000 R.

In the past, the main reason for being unfaithful to the fully wired racer as a mature racer was usually “back”. But switching to a naked BMW – possibly even a naked BMW – was often and mostly rightly perceived as a descent. The only thing worse would have been the switch to the cruiser, for sports drivers the limbo that has become two-wheelers and the precursor to the large scooter, the known penultimate vehicle with which a person can be on the move. Then there is only the big black station wagon with the curtains. But since spring 2014 there is the BMW S 1000 R a damn good reason to switch to a potent undisguised woman without a “back”. The sister model of the S 1000 RR, which is over 4000 euros more expensive, was simply not knitted according to the pattern “ancient engine in the simplest frame equipped with the cheapest spring elements”, and even tearing off the plastic sleeve and installing a wide handlebar wasn’t enough. The basic concept of the engine, chassis and brakes corresponds to the assemblies of the double-R, but the chassis geometry and engine details of the single-R differ noticeably. Instead of a disguised 193 hp, a bare 161 hp are activated, which is definitely good for the response with the more direct e-gas function (“ride-by-wire”). As a result of the “torque optimization” campaign (including a new cylinder head), the R always lifts up to 10,000 rpm – you read that correctly: always! – more Newton meters on the crankshaft than its supposedly sportier sister. And what does that lead to in connection with a much more relaxed sitting position? Correct: to a much more dynamic pace, at least in public traffic. With the wonderfully handy, extremely predictable and never fussy S 1000 R, even normal drivers get along straight away. And ex-racers may be wondering why they didn’t take the step to the undisguised much earlier, because motorcycling can hardly be more relaxed than with the S 1000 R. And that without a “back”.

Market situation

Well over 5000 new machines sold in Germany alone since 2014 mean that there is now a very good range of used machines. Unfortunately, it is not yet really cheap.

Low price level from 10,000 EUR:
Similar to the offer shown in the picture above, the (relatively high) mileage makes the price. However, offers under ten mille are the total exception. From 11,000 euros there is a certain selection.

Medium price level from 12,000 EUR:
Four-digit mileage, complete equipment and even additional extras are more the rule than the exception in this class. Large selection, very often also from private.

High price level from 14,000 EUR:
Traditionally, this league romps about demonstrators and daily approvals, but also one or the other extreme conversion. At 17 Mille, however, the pain threshold is also reached for this.

Dealer interview

Fritz Doser (47), Operations Manager at G. Wilhelmsen Motorradtechnik in Oeversee, Schleswig-Holstein’s largest BMW and KTM dealer.

The S 1000 R tempts you to heat. There may be increased sales of fall parts?
No not at all. On the one hand, there are a few assistance systems such as ABS and ASC on board that take some risk out of the vehicle. On the other hand, the customers are no longer of the particularly endangered age.

What does he look like, the typical S 1000 R customer?
He used to drive a Suzuki GSX-R 1100, has gotten a bit older like all of us, now wants something more modern and doesn’t sit quite as sporty anymore. And he thinks – for whatever reasons – nothing of the boxer. In terms of age, he’s somewhere in his 40s.

The customer stands in the shop and has the choice between single and double R. How is the purchase decision made?
Sometimes like buying a sofa: sit on it and feel good. The over-50-year-old who admits that he can no longer sit in such a sporty way buys the R. And those who still want to drive on the Autobahn at 300 km / h on Sunday morning buy the RR. And would probably be better served with the R …

Are there BMW buyers who simply buy the basic model without extras or packages?
Happened to us once a year. Otherwise, there is the full program, with the S 1000 R that means the sports and dynamics package and shift assistant (which is now included in the sports package). Anti-theft alarm systems and forged wheels are not in great demand.

What else do people like to take apart from the BMW special equipment program??
Crash pads, brake and clutch levers, covers here, panels there – just the usual treats from Rizoma, LSL and Co.

The S 1000 R is a wonderful driving machine – is it moved an above-average amount in practice?
Probably not, that is within limits. 4000 to 5000 kilometers per year are normal. A lot depends on the community. If the neighbor or colleague also drives a motorcycle, the mileage increases too.

Are S 1000 R customers loyal to the workshop?
Absolutely, apart from changing the oil you can’t really do much yourself. Hardly anything works without a readout device. The used vehicles represented on the market are therefore always very well maintained.
