Sometimes it is enough that circumstances change for you to change yourself. In 2003 the new circumstances were called the Honda CBR 600 RR and Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R – two radical heaters whose racetrack appearances ensured that the original circuit queen Yamaha YZF-R6 suddenly had something touristic. And that despite the fact that the R6, with new packaging and practically completely new technology, attracted super sports customers in the same year. In the first year, the first R6 with injection technology also sold very well, but just a year later the numbers collapsed – the aforementioned circumstances and test statements such as “comparatively comfortable seating position” and “soft, highway-compatible chassis settings” did it ugly work.

The Yamaha executives were not deterred and gave the R6 a constant and mostly very sensible model update. For example, an upside-down fork in 2005 and finally a front wheel tire size customary in its class, but in 2006 they brought out the really big facelift club: everything new – even shorter-stroke design (red area from 17500 rpm!), Even more power (127 PS), new frame, lots of magnesium and titanium. All for a very ambitious surcharge of 1200 euros. The sales figures picked up for a short time, on the racetrack the R6 was again a force, but in everyday life very little happened below 8000 rpm and everything above that happened. We continued with the loving facelift, but the super-handy and top-quality R6 never really got out of hand in new sales. But that doesn’t change their popularity as used cars.

A small-volume barrel organ without mechanical flaws – is that possible? It really does exist, because the R6 is a model of reliability. 2001 extended Yamaha the inspection intervals from 6,000 to 10,000 kilometers; and since 2003 there has only been one recall (November 2006 because of air filter fastening screws) – that already reveals a lot. Problems with the R6 are almost always homemade, and two target groups are particularly susceptible to them. First: some race training junkies who have made a real art out of hiding damage caused by falls as skilfully as possible. Very popular: carbon or other frame protectors, as well as third-class cladding parts from Eastern Bloc sources, only installed after contact with the ground. Second group, in which the used buyer should take a closer look and ask: Youngsters, where the R6 is chronically in third or fourth hand, and who consider the expenditure on oil, candles, chain sets and tires to be exaggerated luxury. Conversely: It is best to buy first hand, check the inevitable modifications (exhaust, indicators, short tail) for execution and, if necessary, entry. And be sure to have the original silencer with you – keyword emissions test.

Not enough lean angle? That was never an issue for R6 drivers. Not even with the 2008 model.

The stock is large, good used ones are not in short supply. But the good and, above all, affordable used ones only very rarely end up at dealerships, and if they do, as an exception, they don’t stay long. Especially in the price range 4000 to 6000 euros, the professionals could sell a lot more. Provided that the R6 is largely original, including the most popular conversions mentioned under “Viewing”. If you don’t want to spend more than 4,000 to 5,000 euros, you have to bring time with you when you buy it privately and, if necessary, accept long visits for sightseeing, because even the first injectors – now eight years old – have a high and for super athletes unusually good value retention. Under four million there are practically only fall damage and / or ominous offers from Poland or Italy. If you are looking for the more radical, but somewhat less everyday 2006 model, you can get at least 6000 euros.
