Good for those whom nature has provided with a body to which so-called standard sizes fit. People, on the other hand, who were always put under the basket while playing basketball as teenagers or who hardly have to contort themselves while dancing limbo – not to forget all those who have more or less painstakingly bought a beer over the years – yes, these people probably have less fun buying clothes.

Sits, fits, wobbles and has air!

Grrr! Actually everything is great, but despite the stretch, there is a thick bulge over the knee. If Dina is still growing, no problem. But the 30-year-old hardly does any more, so: back to the locker room!

Finally found an S-trousers that fit perfectly on the stomach and do not pinch. And the lederhosen sit less baggy than the textile goods before.

The knee protectors of the trouser legs sit completely next to them at shin height.

First of all, S-sen! Emotionally, Dina fits size S, but the sleeves are too long. Size XS, on the other hand, tightens the shoulders. It won’t work like that!

Different jacket, different cut: the alternative in size L fits perfectly. Stefan can mix normal and special sizes.

The same model in long size L-L: perfect!

9/18
The trousers in L are far too high above the foot.

The lanky Stefan tries a jacket in L first. The sleeves on this model are cut very short. That’s not an option, keep looking!

Wonderful, the trousers now also sit well: short size K-2XL. Luca now knows: he probably can’t cope with normal sizes.

Ha, that fits! The elbow protectors fit perfectly, cut close to the body and still comfortable. Belly size 305 seems like the right choice.

Dilemma: The XL pants pinch the waistband like hell, the legs of the XXL version are too long and wrinkle.
Dentges
14/18
XL would be normal at a height of 1.80 meters. But it’s way too tight. The 3XL jacket offers enough air in the stomach area, but the arms lose themselves.

Stefan (left): a good 1.90 meters tall, long legs; Luca: 1.79 meters, 99 kilos (or a few more …); Dina: 1.58 meters, usually in the S-Class and smaller.

Market overview of motorcycle clothing in special sizes
When normal sizes don’t fit…
Asparagus, pug, dwarf or bearded type – not every clothes carrier is built according to standard. When normal sizes don’t fit well, safety clothing for motorcyclists becomes tricky. MOTORRAD says and shows what is important.

Good for those whom nature has provided with a body to which so-called standard sizes fit. For example, a six-foot man who weighs around 80 kilos. If this person has no monkey arms or stork legs, the lucky one can march into any store, choose clothes according to their taste, try them on – off to the cash register! People, on the other hand, who were always put under the basket while playing basketball as teenagers or who hardly have to contort themselves while dancing limbo – not to forget all those who have more or less painstakingly bought a beer over the years – yes, these people probably have less fun buying clothes. Because often the stuff doesn’t fit. This is tricky with motorcycle clothing, because only if it fits perfectly does it guarantee optimal function. With standard sizes you often don’t get very far and need oversized, short, belly or long sizes.

It’s just stupid if the store can’t offer this. Smaller manufacturers and dealers in particular are not equipped for every customer request. What a consumer may not be aware of: The seller bears a higher financial risk if he offers a huge range of sizes. To illustrate: Let’s take an example of a trouser model that the manufacturer has in its range in unisex sizes S to XXL. Makes five sizes. If he wants to deliver two of each size to 50 dealers, he has to produce 500 trousers or buy them from his supplier. Since unisex sizes like S and M fit both men and women, there is a high probability that stocks will sell well. At the end of the season, there will probably be only a few leftover trousers hanging in the shops.
Custom sizes are usually left over
Dentges
Stefan (left): a good 1.90 meters tall, long legs; Luca: 1.79 meters, 99 kilos (or a few more …); Dina: 1.58 meters, usually in the S-Class and smaller.
Another manufacturer, however, would like to have a better selection ready for its customers. In addition to the common clothing sizes 46 to 58 – comparable to the unisex sizes S to XXL – his trouser model is also available in larger normal clothing sizes up to 64. That makes ten different sizes. Motorcyclists should also be able to choose these trousers in women’s clothing sizes 36 to 44, making five additional sizes. In addition, the more popular short sizes from 23 to 28 and the usual long sizes from 94 to 110 should be available. That’s another eleven sizes. In total: 26 different sizes for one trouser model. If this manufacturer also wants to supply 50 dealers who buy two pieces of each size, that would be 2,600 pieces, an investment about five times as high.
Experience has shown that extreme sizes are most likely to hang on the clothes hooks at the dealers at the end of the season. Because the bottom line is that most buyers get along quite well with standard sizes. Excess stocks may have to be sold off. Or they gather dust in the manufacturer’s warehouse, because many retailers only order special sizes upon customer request. Unless they were able to shop at attractive pre-order prices and try to get rid of the oversize of the extra sizes in sales promotions themselves.
Dealers and manufacturers – both are faced with the same dilemma: large supply, high risk. But big offers also mean big opportunities. The providers listed in the overview table all go for opportunities rather than risk avoidance. That’s good, because you want to address as many customers as possible with as many custom-fit articles as possible. The following table shows how your portfolio differs in detail. MOTORRAD readers can see for themselves who is most likely to go to if they are familiar with problems with the rider’s equipment.
Offer and advice are the most important
Just as important as a wide range of special sizes is often the experience of the seller when choosing the right motorcycle clothing. An experienced and trained consultant can usually see at first glance which sizes and models best suit his customer. Unfortunately, many buyers only look at the price, so that an unsuitable special offer is often chosen instead of the special size. That will take its revenge later on tour if it pinches and squeezes or just whistles in through the cracks. Worse still: In the event of a fall, the protectors slip in equipment that is too sloppy, too long or too short.
As a specialist saleswoman, Conny Just from the motorcycle corner in Stuttgart is familiar with the entire range of special and extra sizes and knows her customers: “It takes years for many to realize that their previous size was completely wrong.”
The customers of the Holzwickeder specialist Josef Joy (www.big-joy.de), which has made a name for itself in the XXL-and-larger market for years. There is nothing for them in a normal range. As a retailer, Joy therefore offers jackets from various manufacturers with a waist circumference of up to 200 centimeters, as well as very small sizes, and the in-house tailoring department makes changes according to customer requirements possible. Even with the manufacturer Stadler In the Bavarian town of Aidenbach, the service includes adaptations and custom-made textile motorcycle clothing.
Waist sizes in demand in Germany
Apparently there is a market for real problem sizes – even if only a small one. The positive result of the MOTORRAD market research: Almost every major supplier now has at least one item of the respective product group in stock in particularly large, small, wide or slim special sizes. Far more often, however, motorcyclists ask for custom sizes that differ only slightly from the standard. So-called waist sizes in particular seem to find good sales in Germany. Whether motorcyclists have actually put on an average of stomach and hips in recent years – pure speculation. But the fact is that the average age has risen. It is hardly surprising that the athletic type with standard sizes is less common in over 40s than in the U-21 league.
Not just providers like IXS oder Held, who have excelled for years with an astonishingly large portfolio of edge sizes, believe that high-quality motorcycle clothing and higher customer demands are linked to one another. That is why they offer extra sizes and fine gradations – despite a certain financial risk. Pay attention: no-name goods rarely fit other than standard types, and good advice is probably the exception when selling cheap clothes. Fortunately, motorcyclists who deviate from the standard don’t have to be forced into a corset just because the right size isn’t in the store. And that’s good.

Conclusion
Dentges
XL would be normal at a height of 1.80 meters. But it’s way too tight. The 3XL jacket offers enough air in the stomach area, but the arms lose themselves.
Alpinestars
The Italians are particularly strong when it comes to boots. Drivers with really big feet will almost always find a suitable model for sports and terrain. Otherwise, however, little goes beyond the normal range. Positive: the Stella model series with special women’s cuts.
Buse
providers Buse is also a full-range supplier for oversized and special sizes. Above all, the decent selection of textile jackets is convincing, but only one jacket in extraordinary oversize (12XL) is on offer. Good address also for helmet buyers with big heads.

Full supplier Dainese offers 55 textile and leather jackets in finely graduated sizes for women and men as well as in special short and long sizes. Sports drivers are happy about the excellent options for one-piece and two-piece station wagons.
Germas
The comparatively small provider Germas from the Franconian town of Schwabach handles problem cases very well. Extremely stout and tall people will find what they are looking for when it comes to textile jackets and trousers. Up to 12XL and women’s plus sizes up to 52, you can’t complain about that. Interesting: good offer in the affordable price segment. In addition, Germas also equips the offspring with child sizes.
Germot
At the Dreieich provider Germot Tour riders looking for inexpensive textile clothing (also for children) are in good hands. The variety of models with extreme sizes and special special sizes is rather manageable. A good range and choice of helmets: With our own house brand and Caberg helmets, there is something for everyone with a head circumference of 48 to 70 cm!
Hein Gericke
The chain of branches Hein Gericke from Dusseldorf is somewhat disappointing in this comparison. In terms of textile jackets, there are men’s ready-to-wear sizes up to 62 and articles up to 6XL, but the variety of products with sizes that deviate from the standard is relatively small.
hero
The Allgau people have the greatest tradition in gloves. So it’s no wonder that you have the best offer here in comparison: from mini size 3 to made-to-measure products for problematic paws. In addition, can hero Equip from head to toe. A huge portfolio: for example jackets up to 10XL, short and stocky sizes, women’s cuts, clothing for long lunks and children’s equipment. Great!
IXS
Top selection of IXS helmets and boots for very small and large heads and feet. Also great for the Swiss: textile clothing. Bodybuilders would have to train for a long time before they could blow up jackets with a chest circumference of 179 cm, and those who enjoy gourmets would have to increase their stomach size until the waistband of 170 cm should no longer be sufficient. Good: women’s boots with a special cut.
Louis
Louis from Hamburg, the largest motorcycle clothing in Europe, has a solid range of plus and special sizes for its own brands. Good, but not very good, because people with extreme figure expressions do not always find suitable items.
Motor port
On the North Sea coast, Motoport’s clothing experts know what their specialist dealers need: a good selection and a wide range of sizes. This is what the Vareler offer with their inexpensive Difi brand and high-quality textile clothing from Dane without question.
polo
For each product group, Polo has at least one item in its range outside of the usual standard sizes, even a helmet specially tailored for women’s heads. Short and long sizes? Only for textile clothing. The offer from Juchen is okay, but not a hit.
Rukka
The Finnish brand can often be found in the upper price segment at specialist dealers in motorcycle textile clothing. As expected, wide-band sizes for women and men as well as stocky, short and long special sizes are good form.
Stadler
Stadler would actually have little place in this comparison, because apart from textile jackets and trousers there is nothing for motorcyclists with extraordinary figures. But the Bavarians tailor everything exactly to the body if required and already offer plenty of off-the-peg products for bikers who are too small, tall, slim and stout.
Standard and deviation
BILLION
Size information.
Non-binding guidelines from the textbook: For normal sizes, the waistband is 12 cm smaller than the chest circumference. Squat sizes, often referred to as short sizes, should fit smaller, more robust people better: If you are less than 6 cm tall, the waist circumference is 8 cm smaller than the chest circumference. For slim sizes (long sizes), the ratio of waist to chest circumference is the same as for normal sizes, but the body length is 9 cm larger.
Angela Mahr-Erhardt, textile expert in the Function department & Care at the Hohenstein Institute in Bonnigheim.
How are clothing sizes determined in general, and who actually determines what special sizes are?
Mahr-Erhardt: In the last series measurement, Size-Germany (www.sizegermany.de), over 10,000 people were measured with modern 3-D scanners. The body measurements determined in this way have been incorporated into the current measurement tables for the manufacture of clothing. These define different lengths and circumferences for the individual clothing sizes. These include, for example, leg and arm length, shoulder width, chest, waist, and waist and hip measurements. The generally applicable measurement tables for the manufacture of clothing do not know the term “special sizes”. These are individually defined by the manufacturers.
