With its three-wheelers, Can-Am is not really at home with cars or motorcycles. Now the Canadians have introduced the Can-Am Ryker, a new basic model at a competitive price, with which new customer groups are to be opened up.

In Europe, Can-Am currently has three versions of its Spyder tricycle: Sport Cruising, Cruiser Touring and Touring. The prices range from around 18,899 to 29,299 euros. The offers are also rather expensive in other markets. Accordingly, the average age of wealthy buyers is around 62 years. In order to get even more and especially younger customers excited about the three-wheeler concept, the completely newly developed basic model Ryker has now been launched, which is available in the USA from $ 8,499. In Europe, the Ryker should be available from the beginning of 2019 at prices from 9,799 euros.

Cardan and CVT

In order to lower the price level in such a way, the Canadians have massively rebuilt their tricycle. First, the new model comes as a single-seater (a pillion seat is available for around $ 600 extra). The rear-wheel drive and the rear-wheel guidance are now carried out via a single-sided swing arm made of aluminum with an integrated cardan.

Up to now, a toothed belt drive was used here. The rear wheel is fixed with a central nut. A CVT box was chosen for the transmission to make the tricycle even more user-friendly. It is also equipped with a reverse function for driving backwards, which is easily activated with a lever. The braking system relies on a single pedal for the combined disc brake system. The throttle is still given by the twist grip on the right end of the handlebar. The handlebars and footrests can be adjusted without the use of tools so that everyone can find an optimal sitting position. The Ryker has to do without the large storage systems of the sister models. A 7-liter compartment in front of the driver must be sufficient here.

Downsizing for the engine too. There is a choice of two Rotax motors. The base engine is a 600 cm³ twin with 47 hp, as an alternative, the cross can also be made on a 900 cm³ in-line three-cylinder with 77 hp. Then, however, the base price rises to $ 9,999.

Anyone who invests $ 10,999 gets the Ryker Rally Edition, which comes with a passenger seat, longer suspension travel, coarser tires and an ESP with a drift function.

In general, the warranty period for the Ryker in the USA has been reduced from two to one year. If you want to upgrade your Ryker, you can choose from around 75,000 different combinations.
