So that the search for suitable accessory brake pads doesn’t turn out to be a gamble, MOTORRAD tried ten sintered metal pads and tested them for bite and stamina.

Every child in racing now knows that no flower pot can be won with brute acceleration alone. Daring braking maneuvers are what make the difference between victory and defeat. And that is what makes powerful braking systems with stable linings possible. It is not that “dogged” in everyday life, but the requirements for road surfaces are hardly less than in racing.
For example, the stoppers should withstand much more than just one ride, and they also have to decelerate sufficiently in the rain and in cold conditions – all properties with which high-tech carbon brakes have their problems. After all, these systems are resistant to high temperatures and do not tend to dangerous fading (greatly diminishing braking effect with repeated high loads up to total failure). Road-legal brake pads should also have this stability, so that there are no nasty surprises on long pass descents.
Sintered brake pads have proven to be a good choice in all of these areas for years. MOTORRAD therefore asked nine candidates from the aftermarket for a comparison test on one Yamaha TDM 850. The original Yamaha stoppers serve as reference pads. Incidentally, some of the accessory pads are approved for many other Yamaha models such as the TRX 850, XJR 1200 and FJ 1200. These approvals vary from manufacturer to manufacturer – it’s worth asking. The only requirement for the sintered test participants was the approval for Yamaha’s TDM 850, the current year of construction.
Regarding the test procedure: All pads were first measured and run in according to regulations. Then they had to prove their qualities on dry roads. When it comes to responsiveness, the decisive factor is how spontaneously the pads react to braking commands. Too vague or delayed response is rated negatively. The dosage indicates whether the braking force can be increased continuously and in a controllable manner. A steeply rising but linear force-delay diagram is optimal. This means that higher braking forces on the lever result in proportionally higher deceleration. Some test rubbers, such as EBC or Premier, show strongly progressively increasing deceleration values, which makes controlled dosing difficult, especially for less experienced – only real racers can enjoy this peculiarity.
The sub-item manual force evaluates the forces to be applied to the brake lever. In this point, all test rubbers performed well to very well. How well they decelerate in the event of an emergency braking in a cold or in a warm state can also be seen in the individual data boxes. One of the most important points in the functional tests is fading. The gratifying result: all candidates performed exemplary and decelerated almost unimpressed even after the sixth emergency braking from 100 km / h in quick succession.
The next test criterion: the wet braking behavior. To test this, all candidates were watered while driving. From a canister in the tank bag, water flows through pipes directly onto the brake calipers and discs. The test pads had to show their skills in the wet after braking several times. And that even convinces with the alleged wet test loser SBK3 from Carbone Lorraine, whose response behavior and effectiveness are always sufficient on wet roads.
Conclusion: All tested sintered brake pads left a good impression and are far superior to inexpensive, organic pads in terms of stability, effectiveness and fading. The Lucas stoppers performed best with a wafer-thin lead over AP-Racing, Brembo and EBC.
