Marc Coma won the 7th stage of the Dakar 2012 ahead of his teammate Cyril Despres and the Portuguese Paulo Goncalves. Despite this new success, the defending champion only takes two minutes from his French rival who comfortably manages his lead..

"I did a little lazy today" (Cyril Despres)

Passed in convoy from Argentina to Chile following the cancellation of the sixth stage due to too difficult weather conditions (read our), the Dakar 2012 caravan resumed the race yesterday for a stage rallying Copiapo to Copiapo (Chile).

Despite this change of country, the physiognomy of motorcycle racing has hardly changed: left as a scout, the Frenchman Cyril Despres saw a Marc Coma come back to him determined to make up for his ten-minute delay, due to his navigation error during the 3rd step (read).

The first to pass almost every checkpoint during the second part of the day, the n ° 1 finally finished the stage 2’03 ahead of Despres, who did not hide that he was content to "suck the wheel" of his Iberian opponent.

"I was a little lazy today because Marc opened from km 200, which is the start of the 2nd part of the special, but I think it’s also the race. So for that, I tell him thank you already ", admits Despres.

"There is always a bit of strategy, because we know that we can play with the two minutes. Having said that, I arrive here with paralyzed hands. But it was really a nice stage with beautiful dunes … And then it feels good to be in the lead on the rest day. I’m happy ", analyzes the French driver who will be able to breathe a little today during the first day of rest of the rally-raid..

"I’ll take two minutes from Cyril, but that’s obviously not enough!", Admits Marc Coma, who paved the way in the dunes without making mistakes. The Spaniard remains in second place overall, 7’48 behind Despres.

"But hey, we know the strategy well, and we know that we will undoubtedly do a 2 minute move for me, a 2 minute move for Cyril, and it’s hard to change that when there is only ‘only one road’, says the three-time Dakar winner with a touch of spite …

Francesco Lopez out ?

Behind the two favorites, the pursuit continues between contenders for the podium who could even aim higher in the event of a major failure at the top. Paulo Gonçalves (Husqvarna), who proves that his victory last year in Iquique owed nothing to chance, signs the 3rd fastest time of the day, 2’49 ‘from Coma (and only 46 seconds from Despres!).

Fourth overall, he got closer at the same time to his compatriot Helder Rodrigues (Yamaha) who consolidated his 3rd place. The two men are nevertheless 49’39 and 55’33 respectively from the leader in the general classification….

Quick for his first stage at home, the Chilean Francesco Lopez was unlucky: victim of a fall at the start of the special which damaged his Aprilia, Chaleco especially woke up from recent pain in his knee which could well force him to crash. ‘abandonment…

"I fell in the first part of the special, not very hard, but it woke up pain in my right knee. And in the second part of the special, I could hardly drive because I was in so much pain in the dunes", testifies the Aprilia rider who was seriously injured at the rally in Tunisia in April.

"I do not know, but I do not see how I could leave tomorrow", admits the Chilean who had needed nearly three months to recover from his injuries … "Good, fortunately it is the day of rest and I’m going to see the doctors at the bivouac and call mine, but I think my Dakar ends here. For now, I’m really in too much pain ".

Frenchman David Casteu finished this seventh stage in 7th place, 8’48 behind the lead, while Frans Verhoeven, star driver Sherco, finished ninth at 9’24. Overall, the two men are respectively 5th and 26th.

The eighth stage of the Dakar 2012 will start from Copiapo tomorrow morning and join Antofagasta (Chile). It will develop over 245 kilometers of liaison and 477 against the clock (special). Stay connected !
