Nothing is played…
On a Dakar, anything is possible as long as the finish line is not crossed: the misadventures experienced by Marc Coma yesterday between Antofagasta and El Salvador (Chile) confirm this wise reflection shared by all the competitors (read in particular our).
Ultra-domineering overall with more than 40 minutes in advance, the Spaniard set off on Thursday morning with confidence but also with the ambition to mark the spirits during this very long day (605 km in a single special). Very early on, however, Coma experienced her first alert with a small fall that cost her a few minutes….
Physically and mechanically unscathed, the Catalan and his motorbike immediately set off again to assault the dunes where they swallowed the "Despres-Yamaha" duo to offer themselves the victory, the third for the KTM official since the start of the rally. First to cross the finish line in 6h36min, n ° 2 was initially declared the winner with a little less than three minutes ahead of Despres and 5min30 over Olivier Pain, author of a well-managed stage..
But a few hours later, drama: Marc Coma receives a 15-minute penalty for having changed his engine at the bivouac! As a result, he moved from first to tenth place in the stage standings, but quite comfortably kept the overall reins (official rankings modified below).
Cyril Despres is therefore officially declared the winner of this eleventh stage, thus signing his second victory for the Blues of Iwata in front of Olivier Pain, Jordi Viladoms and Joan Barreda Bort.
This one is the first to take advantage of the misadventure of Coma, of which he is the dolphin in the general classification: victim of a fall without gravity on the physical level, the Honda rider indeed "saved the furniture" by finishing the race. stage without its navigation instruments, broken on impact (photo opposite) !
The announcement of Marc Coma’s penalty having come rather late, the video summary below produced by the organizer (ASO) is inaccurate. MNC nevertheless offers it to its readers, especially for the beauty of the landscapes. !
