Francisco "Chaleco" Lopez won the thirteenth special of, the penultimate stage of the 35th edition of the biggest rally-raid in the world. The Chilean also offered second place overall at the expense of Ruben Faria, only 15th on this day spent between Copiapo and La Serena (Chile).
Chaleco puts on the gum !
As usual when he races at home, Francisco Lopez sent a lot of gas for this 13th stage: the Chilean did not make a quarter for 380 km and signs his fourth stage victory of the Dakar 2013, his tenth of his career.
The KTM rider ends the day with 5min25 ahead of Despres and 5min29 over Gonçalves who once again signs an excellent performance with the Husqvarna.
Despite the between Despres and Faria, the defending champion’s water carrier lost a place in the overall standings, after finishing the day in a modest 15th place: by the Portuguese’s own admission, it was going too fast for him at the top of the rally …
"I knew I was going to waste time, but I didn’t know they were going to go that fast!", Sighs Faria. "We made a mistake at km 191, with Barreda and Verhoeven, and came back. Then I saw that Chaleco was driving very hard, and I said to myself that I shouldn’t risk falling. to get this second place. I didn’t come for that, I came for Cyril: I didn’t want to do anything stupid ", confesses Cyril Despres’ teammate within the official KTM team.
For his part, "Chaleco" is obviously not a little proud to be inserted between the two factory Katoches with his "client" motorcycle, which is moreover on the eve of the last stage of the rally..
"The week has been hard and today’s stage very fast. At the end I was able to take the lead: so the day was good!", Says Francisco "Chaleco" Lopez. "We will now see what happens with the weather, the navigation, the other riders. So far I’ve done things right. I’m happy. But I have to take care of the bike. has things in the gearbox that are wrong ".
Solid leader with 8min15 ahead of Lopez, Cyril Despres regrets that his teammate has lost a position, but is already looking to the very last special that will take the bikers to Santiago de Chile.
"Motorcycles are not just strategy: rally raid is also sport, we have just completed 440 km", blows the leader of the 35th Dakar. "I was well in the first part, where there was a lot of navigation. Then, I saw that I had regained time at" Chaleco "and that it was not going to fly in 140 km . So I said to myself that we were going to be a little careful with the mechanics. As I swallowed a lot of dust during the morning, I preferred to manage, in a cool way ", he explains.
"With Ruben, we tried!", Assures the French who wanted above all to try to "pull" his teammate on the second place of the podium. "In his defense, the navigation was really not easy in the morning, there were two or three rather complicated readings of tracks to decipher".
Overall, KTM trustees for the moment the first five places of the provisional, followed by the Yamaha of Pain, the Honda of Rodrigues and Pizzolito, the Yamaha of Verhoeven and the Husqvarna of Gonçalves. Frenchman Alain Duclos and his Sherco appear in 35th position, more than six hours behind the leader.
