prologue marked by an accident and the cancellation of the first stage because of thunderstorms, the Dakar 2016 really took off between Villa Carlos Paz and Termas de Rio Hondo (Argentina) during the second stage won by the Australian Toby Price , among Marc Coma’s designated successors to bring KTM to its 15th consecutive victory.

A shortened and muddy stage

Price gets his second Dakar stage victory on a special because of the still bad weather in this part of Argentina. The KTM official was able to keep his main rival, the Portuguese Ruben Faria, at a distance during this 350 stage made difficult by the wind, rain and mud.

On his official Husqvarna – equipped with the same mechanical base as the KTM, to which HVA belongs -, Faria finished just 1’20 behind Toby Price, who proves at 28 years old that his from his first Dakar was not the result of hazard.

"On this stage, everything went really well. The real start was today, so it’s incredible. It’s good to be back," said Price..

"We had a lot of time in the saddle, but it was perfect. I can’t wait to do it again tomorrow. It will be a little more difficult, but I know that I will go easy. It may be quite similar to what we had today and that there was not too much navigation ", projects the young Australian whose navigation is not (yet?) among the strong points.

Starting first on his official Honda, Joan Barrada Bort finally finished 7th (6th provisionally), more than three minutes from the winner. HRC rider, vying for victory last year before experiencing a technical glitch, admits he lacked pace before wasting time stuck in his CRF450 Rally.

"It was a difficult day, I opened the track and it is never easy. There were some delicate points and we also met a lot of animals on the track. All of this complicates the race", explains Barreda..

"It was the ‘real’ start of the Dakar and I didn’t really have the right feelings. Before the finish I found mud and water. The bike got stuck. I had to ride it. to get out then I had to clean the navigation devices. Ruben (Faria, editor’s note) then arrived and as he was well on the pace, I followed him to finish ".

Frenchman Alain Duclos took the opportunity to place his Sherco in third place, ahead of the KTMs of Walkner and Svitko. The three competitors occupy the same position in the provisional classification. Paulo Goncalves finished the day in 6th position (7th in the provisional) on his official Honda, while Helder Rodrigues, another logical favorite on his factory Yamaha, is in 13th place in the stage and in the overall standings..

Part 116th following her bad prologue, Laia Sanz whipped her official KTM to finish the stage in 15th position (21st provisionally). Beginner Adrien Van Beveren, 4th in the prologue on his official WRF450, finishes his first "real" stage in the Dakar in 30th place, just ahead of his compatriot Olivier Pain.

The Dakar in 125 cc 2-stroke !

A word finally on the remarkable performance of Sylvain Espinasse, classified 94th of the stage and 98th in the provisional on his Husqvarna of … 125 cc! For his third Dakar (the first was at Sherco and the second in motorbike trunks, unassisted formula), the Auvergne has decided to take up the challenge of completing the "King of rallies" on an eighth of a liter !

Prepared by, its 125cc clashes with the "big" 450 cc of other competitors, especially since it is a 2-stroke! Sylvain Espinasse must therefore carry oil in his jacket in order to prepare his mixture, an additional difficulty for this crew whose maximum cruising speed is voluntarily restricted to 100 km / h.
