DEKRA takes over Lausitzring
DEKRA takes over Lausitzring
For the mobility of the future
The expert organization DEKRA will take over the Lausitzring on November 1, 2017. Together with the DEKRA Technology Center (DTC), which has been in the immediate vicinity of the race track in Klettwitz (Brandenburg) since 2003, the innovation center for testing the mobility of the future is to be built. This in turn is to become a central component of the international test network for automated and networked driving that DEKRA intends to establish in Europe and Asia, and promises new jobs in the region.

“In the first step, we are investing a total of more than 30 million euros in setting up this test network”, explained Stefan Kolbl, CEO of DEKRA e.V. and DEKRA SE. “The future topics of automation and connectivity are becoming more and more important for the safety of mobility. We take our ‘security mission’ very seriously, which the DEKRA founders laid down more than 90 years ago. That is why we offer our customers in the automotive industry testing and development expertise for the autonomous and networked mobility of the future. The takeover of the Lausitzring and the merger with the DEKRA Technology Center are a very decisive step in this direction.”
As part of the network, the focus in Klettwitz is on setting up test systems for all aspects of automated driving. In the medium term, this will be supplemented by the topic of connectivity, which within the DEKRA Group is primarily based at the Málaga location. From there, appropriate testing capacities will also be set up in Klettwitz. “The combination of automation and networking is crucial for the future of autonomous driving. This is why our customers, especially those in the automotive industry, need the necessary testing services from a single source. We can offer you this in the future thanks to the intensive cooperation between all DEKRA locations and business areas involved”, says Stefan Kolbl.
DEKRA is investing a double-digit million amount in the Klettwitz location for the largest manufacturer-independent center for automated and networked driving in Europe. “This involves routes and systems that enable comprehensive testing of automated driving functions. As a development and test partner for the automotive industry, we will be able to represent very complex scenarios with great flexibility in the future, be it for inner-city, extra-urban or motorway journeys, ”says Clemens Klinke, member of the DEKRA SE Executive Board and responsible for the Automotive business unit. In detail, two city courses, an overland course and a motorway section will be available on our existing test oval, plus several large asphalt surfaces that are predestined for such tests.
The infrastructure will also contain all the components required to incorporate vehicle-to-vehicle or vehicle-to-infrastructure communication (V2V or V2X). “The metrological equipment will include state-of-the-art systems such as driving robots, self-driving platforms, various soft targets and mobile traffic infrastructure devices with which we can test camera, laser and radar-based environment recognition systems”, so latch.
“We are pleased that the next chapter of the Lausitzring is being opened with such positive omens”, explains Josef Meier, managing partner of EuroSpeedway Verwaltungs GmbH, from which DEKRA is taking over the ring. “After eight years in which we have successfully operated and further developed the Lausitzring, we were faced with the question of how we could transform it into a long-term, future-oriented concept in view of the current investment needs. Together with DEKRA as a reliable partner for many years, we have now found a good solution from our point of view.”
In the future, the expanded DEKRA Technology Center will also be able to offer high-quality education and training events relating to automated driving functions. A capacity of up to 500 participants per day is planned for corresponding training courses.
After the takeover, the site will be available to DEKRA customers from the beginning of 2018. The planned expansion of routes and infrastructure will largely be completed in the course of 2018.
Numerous high-quality jobs will be created in the DEKRA Technology Center in the coming years. “The personnel expansion will take place step by step and logically follows the requirements for testing automated driving functions”, says Volker Noeske, head of the DTC. There are currently 48 employees at the Lausitzring, including seasonal workers. The plans envisage that 70 highly specialized employees will be added in the medium term – in addition to the almost 100 employees in the DTC so far.
“In Klettwitz, we are investing in the future of mobility and in the future of DEKRA”, summarizes CEO Stefan Kolbl. “The commitment at the Lausitzring is a clear commitment to the location and plays an important role in the implementation of our vision of becoming the global partner for a safe world by 2025.”
