With an update on the Euro 5 hurdle

BMW has made the R nineT model family fit for the Euro 5 standard that will apply from the end of the year. In addition, the special and standard equipment of all models has been sharpened in the long term.

BMW has had R nineT models in its range since 2013. The model family around the air-cooled boxer now includes the R nineT, the R. nineT Pure, the R nineT Scrambler and the R nineT Urban G / S. All come from the same technology kit, but have different characters. For the model year 2021, all family members will receive an engine trimmed to Euro 5 and a revised range of equipment. The R nineT Pure is also available in an A2-compatible performance version.

New cylinder heads for Euro 5

The 1,170 cm³ air-cooled boxer in the current R nineT models has an output of 110 hp and a torque of 116 Nm. However, the two-cylinder only meets the Euro 4 standard. In order to heave the successful series over the Euro 5 hurdle, the BMW technicians had to add more – namely new cylinder heads. Their new shape ensures a more harmonious transition from the outer to the inner cooling fins and newly designed throttle valve parts and cylinder head covers make it look even more aesthetic. A new turbulence system is used inside the cylinder heads, which swirls the mixture to ensure even better and cleaner combustion and more torque. Thanks to an even more voluminous power and torque curve, especially in the range between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm, noticeably better torque values ​​are now achieved than with the predecessor. In the top performance, however, the boxer loses one hp to 109 hp at 7,250 tours, the peak torque remains unchanged at 116 Nm at 6,000 rpm.

Cornering ABS as standard

There is more in terms of standard equipment. All new R nineT models have ABS Pro (curve ABS) in conjunction with DBC (Dynamic Brake Control), a new shock absorber with travel-dependent damping (WAD) and thus more suspension comfort and convenient adjustment of the spring preload via a hand wheel . The driving modes are now also standard on board "Rain" and "Road". The dial in the cockpit has been redrawn, the indicator lights are now invisible when they are not working. Headlights and indicators work with LED technology, and a USB socket supplies power to mobile devices.

Even more options

BMW wouldn’t be BMW if something hadn’t also happened on the optional equipment side. The Pro driving mode with additional driving modes is now available as an option "Dyna" for the R nineT and R nineT Pure as well as "Dirt" for the R nineT Scrambler and R nineT Urban G / S, the dynamic traction control DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) and the engine drag torque control (MSR). The Comfort package includes Pro driving mode, cruise control and heated handles. Also new to the range are the special equipment for cornering lights as well as the rear silencer design option and various rear modifications. The milled part 719 options are expanded and rearranged.

The model upgrade for model year 2021 is rounded off by new standard and special colors. Of particular importance is the "Edition 40 Years GS" the R nineT Urban G / S, which is only available in limited numbers.

The Bavarians have not yet given any prices for the revised BMW R nineT models.

Conclusion

With new cylinder heads, BMW is lifting the air-cooled boxer over the Euro 5 hurdle. The safety equipment has been expanded. And for those who don’t want an off-the-shelf bike, the expanded arsenal of options offers a whole host of new options.
