Xtra steam

The has been populating for almost exactly two years Piaggio X8 the local streets, so an encounter with the compact travel scooter is in principle no longer particularly exciting. The well-known versions with 125 and 250 cubic centimeters will be accompanied by a 400 version from June, which brings new momentum to the X8 range.
Outwardly, almost everything remains the same, only the rear section had to be adapted to make room for the massive drive unit swing arm. The drive unit is based on the company’s well-known X9-500 engine, which was reduced from 460 to 400 cm3 by means of a cylinder with a reduced bore. The hub remained unchanged. Despite this shrinking process, the four-valve engine with 34 hp only produces six less power than its big brother, and the loss of four newton meters of torque is also bearable. Especially since the running culture has clearly improved. However, it is not free of vibrations, which sometimes leads to an invigorating tingling sensation in the seat.
A real hit: the illuminated storage space. A full 50 liters or two full-face helmets can be found under the bench seat, which comfortably transports two people. As an additional delicacy, the 80 centimeter long compartment can not only be loaded by lifting the bench, but also through a separate tailgate. Despite the ample space, the external dimensions are slim enough to scurry through the lines of cars in city traffic. Thanks to the well-coordinated variator, the 400 sprints away quickly when the traffic light starts.
A top speed of over 150 km / h should be possible, says Piaggio, and that shouldn’t be too far from reality. Even at full throttle, the X8, rolling on 14-inch wheels at the front and rear, runs flawlessly on the not always perfectly flat Italian autostradas and nothing can be disturbed. The chassis tuning is quite comfortable, the suspension reacts sensitively to even small bumps. Meanwhile, the driver enjoys the very good wind protection and the pleasant calm behind the windshield. The 400 also masters winding terrain with ease. The new X8 is an interesting and, at around 5300 euros in this class, also a very attractive offer in terms of price. sgl
