5,000 km test
Elegant and super-equipped
Successor of the Speed-R, the Speed-R series 2 is the evolution of the fiber model. Its surname announces it straight away: the Speed-R series 2 is a helmet designed for speed. Its complex aerodynamic shapes and elements underline this orientation.. However, many items of equipment recall a shared classification in GT. Versatility to demonstrate.
Discovery
In its Sauer Mat Black-Silver Black livery, the Shark is an elegant and racy helmet. Crisp silkscreen printing and flawless fit of all components testify to the careful construction and upscale positioning of the Marseillais manufacturer. Flats and ribs energize the shapes, especially on the back which seems almost truncated.
The latter is capped with a stabilization fin supporting extractors with a venturi effect. The visual effect is undeniable. It smells like sport, but not only.
In fact, on the other hand, a front air intake, with two positions, is adjoined by a lever controlling the integrated sunscreen. Its operation is clean, easy to handle and the whole is solid. The chin bar takes the rear dihedral shape, more discreetly and supports a large rocker directing the air flow largely towards the anti-UV treated screen. The latter is equipped with an anti-fog Pinlock and a protuberance on the left side. Sliding freely, the visor then comes to rest on a metal ergo. The latter also allows the maintenance in a fully closed position.
Another good point, the prominent nasal deflector optimizes comfort and reduces the emission of steam in cool weather. For this purpose, there is also a removable anti-swirl lower net adjustable via a cord. The effect of the device can thus be varied. A completely new real plus.
The base of the helmet also reflects the quality of assembly and finish of the French model. A two-material coating highlighted with edging protects the contact area when the Speed-R 2 is placed. Sport obliges, the chinstrap is equipped with a double D buckle, but the straps do not forget the comfort. Large, long, velvet-lined legs protect the neck from unwanted friction. Finally, a pressure allows to fix the end of the strap in order to avoid its slamming.
Threading
Made up of multiaxial glass fibers, the shell is only produced in two sizes…. The trim then comes to dress it to decline the helmet in 5 sizes (XS, S, M L and XL). Thick, the foams are coated with an hypoallergenic bamboo interior, removable and washable.
This coating is particularly pleasant, very soft. At the level of the cheeks, however, the elements seem too prominent, probable ransom of hulls with too versatile dimensions. At the upper level of the skull, the covering consists of nets, optimizing the passage of air and comfort in hot weather. The set is comfortable, with no hard zone.
The Speed-R 2 offers a sensitive space for the ears. Some may fear an increase in noise pollution, others will appreciate not having their esgourdes compressed. Especially since the Easy Fit system is a real advantage for eyeglass wearers. The branches of this pass naturally, without lateral pressure points or levitation of the binoculars. Very appreciable for the annoying with low sight of which I belong…. In addition, the side vision is very good thanks to a wide opening of the helmet.
Dynamic test
Without notch, the visor is adjustable to the millimeter, butting in the low position on the fixing lug. Thus, we easily leave a trickle of air whatever the pace. By pressing more on the screen, a perfectly hermetic seal is obtained, ideal on motorways or circuits. It is then difficult to reopen it with one hand. The lug being lateral and the force to be exerted high, the helmet rotates, often without result. It is then necessary to press in the center of the visor to facilitate the unclipping of the system. With use, the plastic "is made" and handling becomes easier.
In town, we often use the sun visor, effective for daily movements at low speed. In summer at least, because the device is quickly invaded by mist in cool weather…. A problem that is not known on the other hand by the main visor, originally equipped with Pinlock very effective against fogging..
In milder weather, the front ventilation brings a pleasant flow from the urban legal. On the road, it provides powerful ventilation, even becoming too marked when the speed increases. Fast lanes or secondary network show the remarkable stability of the helmet and its relative lightness. The internal maintenance remains constant over the kilometers being forgotten. The effect of the fin is sensitive, relieving the neck.
Finally, the Speed-R 2 is comfortable, whatever the weather, the textile remarkably wicking away moisture when the mercury rises. Soundproofing is less convincing for GT use but remains acceptable.
On the track, the sound pressure quickly becomes more annoying, but the free space at the level of the ears easily allows the wearing of earplugs. At more than 250 km / h, the front ventilation left open almost delivers too much air and generates a consequent noise. The interior comfort remains appreciable but the weight is felt more. Logic for this helmet carrying a retractable solar device. On the other hand, the Shark does everything to keep a cool head on the track. The efficient upper ventilation, coupled with the nets, prevents heatstroke.
Visor disassembly / assembly
The disassembly of the visor is very convincing. Discreet and efficient, the small "Push One" levers easily unclip the screen annotated with landmarks. Putting back in place is just as easy.
Conclusion
Elegant, comfortable, the Shark Speed-R 2 displays an appreciable versatility thanks to an important accessorization. Pinlock, anti-eddy net and sunscreen ensure ease and performance both for the long haul and for occasional circuit use. In addition, it is ready to receive the optional Sharktooth home communication system. Finally its studied ergonomics and a high level of finish justify a price accordingly.
Displayed 369 €, the French helmet reveals a very interesting performance / price ratio. It will be opposed to the best-seller of the segment: Scorpion EXO-1200 Air, priced less at 329 € only and carrying almost comparable options…. except the Pinlock, but not at the level of the Shark. In addition, the finish of the Shark seems more rewarding. Another challenger, the HJC IS17 helmet, with equipment comparable to the Shark, claiming only € 239…. Logical in view of its polycarbonate shell and a recessed finish facing the Shark fiber helmet.
Seductive, the Shark Speed-R 2 Sauer plays the quality card in a segment where price competitiveness often hides a lack of longevity. We quickly forget its few small flaws to appreciate a high performance and safe helmet. This is evidenced by the good results in the Sharp test. A beautiful, comfortable object to secure your travels.
