Competition charmer
5,000 km test
Top of the range of the Scorpion brand, the EXO-2000 series is more specifically dedicated to sports use. Evidenced by the absence of integrated sunscreen, present on its GT counterpart: EXO-1200 Air.
Discovery
No worries, the helmet comes with two visors, clear and tinted…. and its dedicated case. An appreciable detail and it is not the only one. Thus, the screen adopts a Pinlock (eliminating any fog) and lugs for Tear-off. Finally, a latch allows it to be locked in the closed or slightly open position.
The design of the Scorpion reflects its desired area of use, which is particularly dynamic. Ribs structure its shell and its sides are adorned with angular graphics underlined by its GP surname. The flat surfaces of the paintings are clear, the contours precise and the whole provides a rather elegant image..
For ventilation, two air intakes with sliding covers (two positions each) are positioned on the front. The chin guard inherits a rocker of the same type ensuring possible demisting and fresh air intake. Finally, we appreciate the presence of a removable nasal deflector.
Three extractors with screened opening complete the device. Two are placed in the low position while the last element nests in the spoiler aesthetic surrounding the back of the helmet. This element, in addition to its visual impact, improves stability, reduces strain on the neck and drag and optimizes the air flow through the helmet..
The careful aerodynamics also benefit the visor, treated anti UV, whose pivot elements are integrated into the shell. These include, on the Exo-2000 Air GP, a brand new Ellip-Tec screen system. Equipped with more powerful springs for a firm plating of the screen against the seal, this device makes the whole completely hermetic and quieter. And this technique gives better resistance to keep the screen in place in the event of a fall.
For this unfortunate prospect, this helmet is made of a composite multi-fiber shell. This design called TCT (Thermodynamical Composite Technology) provides a progressive deformation of the shell to absorb the energy of the impact as much as possible. The internal, triple-density caps further enhance this buffering effect.
Sport requires, the chinstrap sports a double D buckle and titanium please. Particularly long, the strap is clipped by pressure at its end so as not to snap in the wind. Equally generously sized, the comfort tabs covering this fastener also hold it for better comfort. Likewise, an anti-eddy net will limit the flow of air under the chin..
Threading
This sports headgear has three shell sizes, guaranteeing better comfort for all types of body types. This avoids playing too much with the thickness of the foams. In addition, the Airfit system will best adapt the interior to the contours of your face. The linings are fully removable and washable. They also offer the possibility of emergency disassembly, in the event of an accident, of the cheek pieces, in order to facilitate the removal of the helmet..
The EXO-2000 can be put on easily, revealing a firm comfort while maintaining the head. However, nicely printed, the KwikWick2 fabric lining the interior is not the softest in the category. One obviously leaves an appreciable space for the ears, but the tunnel provided for the temples of glasses is too high, leaving the binoculars to levitate above the nose. Too bad for the daily life where we will console ourselves with an appreciable eye relief.
Dynamic test
The screen switches over 5 levels, leaving plenty of space before it closes completely. We would have liked an intermediate notch and less effort. Especially since only one lateral ergo offset to the left, allows this visor to be lifted, making handling less natural. Especially to reach the first level of openness. In town, we will keep this setting.
Closed, the seal is excellent, the elliptical movement pressing the screen against the seal. The effects of the selected aerators are all the better to feel. All of them are effective, providing the desired look. Other flows are felt on the secondary network and expressways, despite the fairly thin anti-eddy net, the corollary of a design dedicated to performance rather than comfort. Likewise, the soundproofing is slowing down a little, the cavity around the ears transmitting sounds appreciably. However, nothing unbearable, the lightness of the helmet and its destination explaining this observation.
It is in sport piloting and on the circuit that we appreciate the major qualities of the Scorpion EXO-2000 Air GP. The first being its weight: 1,280 g in size M (mine). A real plus, both over the kilometers and on the track. So this helmet does as well as a Shark RSI Carbon !
Combined with this lightness, aerodynamics is the second asset of this helmet. At high speed, it is forgotten and relieves the effects of air pressure. Finally, the fabric absorbs well the possible hot blows that sport piloting provides..
Visor disassembly / assembly
Another positive point: in the maximum open position, switch two levers located on the visor axis plates…. and the screen is free. It is just as easy to replace it. The system seems as durable as it is efficient.
Conclusion
Varnish and screen resistant to scratches and impacts, quality of the interior and maintenance, the Scorpion EXO-2000 Air GP ages well. Well accessorized and designed, it still asks for € 399.99. It’s close to the price of an excellent Shoei NXR, 459 €, admittedly less well endowed, heavier, but remarkably built and durable. Even closer, the HJC RPHA10 Plus Cyper MC5SF at 419.90 € offers a flawless finish.
Finally, note that the Sharp safety test favors the Scorpion more than the HJC during side impacts and places the Shoei in front of the others..
The EXO-2000 Air GP relies on an attractive overall offering and appreciable performance to appeal to pilots looking for a helmet that meets their dynamic pretension. Available in three colors for the GP versions, it will follow your fastest evolutions and adapt to your requirements.
