Suzuki Burgman 400 gains momentum with Euro4

The Suzuki Burgman 400, a pioneer of the maxi-scooter genre at the end of the 90s, benefited in 2017 from significant developments with its transition to Euro4 standards. Sportier look, LED lighting, improved ergonomics and comfort: enough to reinforce the proven qualities of this pleasant switch !

Launched in 1999 – two years before -, it opened up new perspectives on a market made up at the time of scooters of 250 cc maximum. Practical and comfortable, this first maxi-scoot ‘on the market has seduced – and continues to seduce – commuters delighted to be able to easily overtake a truck on the main roads leading to city centers (read in particular our).

Despite the arrival in 2002 of its big brother, the 400 has continued for almost 20 years with pragmatic users, aware of its advantages in terms of weight, price and handling. Aware of its strengths, Suzuki is taking advantage of the compulsory changeover to Euro4 to grant it an interesting 2017 upgrade, valued primarily by a more slender silhouette.

Less "plump", the Burgman 400 model 2017 gains in sportiness and modernism, aspects underlined by its front and rear lighting now in LED. Its dashboard, not very sexy with its dials with needles but functional, provides all the useful information in a central LCD screen: the time, the air and engine temperature, two trips and the fuel level ( illustration below) in particular.

The regime is also observed at the level of the floor and the saddle, both narrower for better accessibility. These changes also benefit the position of the pilot, now more upright on his saddle still equipped with an adjustable backrest. This two-tiered seat also gains in comfort thanks to its additional 20 mm thickness. In return, its height increases significantly – from 710 to 750 mm – while the volume of the trunk is reduced from 62 to 42 liters. Of course, two helmets still fit in the hold, but no longer two full-face as before: now only a full-face and a jet find their place..

Front wheel in 15 inches and single cylinder Euro4

On the practical side, the Burgman 400 renews its two storage compartments in the apron with plug, its parking brake and its passage allowing the attachment of an anti-theft chain in the bottom of its frame, right side. The chassis also evolves with the passage of a front wheel from 14 to 15 inches, for the benefit of stability (the rear does not move: 150/70/13). The damping would also improve via a new suspension with rods, adjustable in preload. The braking remains entrusted to two discs of 260 mm at the front and one of 210 at the rear, all managed by a Nissin ABS announced lighter by "750 g". 

Finally, mechanical level, the 399 cc single cylinder of the Burgman 400 receives the essential adjustments on the injection and the exhaust to meet Euro4 standards. With a view to improving its performance – and therefore by rebound reducing its pollutant emissions – Hamamatsu engine manufacturers have grafted iridium spark plugs to it and increased the volume of its air box by "0.8 l". The sound of mono with double overhead camshafts should also benefit, as well as its relaunches..

The gain of its performance improvements are however not communicated (33 hp and 36 Nm in 2016), nor the price of this Burgman 400 vintage 2017 (6,599 € currently) and its weight (216 kg in 2016). But everything suggests that these last two factors will – slightly? – increase in 2017 in view of the changes made…
