Good and good

Initial tests confirmed that the Honda VTR 1000 F was only moderately sporty. Nevertheless, more and more VTRs are filling the starting fields in popular sport. Some tips on how the Honda is not only more beautiful, but also better.

Jorg Schuller

No question about it – the Honda VTR 1000 F is a good motorcycle. Nevertheless, the disappointment was great when the two-cylinder machine turned out to be a comfortable all-rounder rather than a Ducati hunter in the first tests.
In addition, deficiencies were revealed: the thirst or the low tank volume, plus the treacherous tank ventilation, which often causes short-term standstills when the fuel keg is full to the brim. Or the right bend that sits down at an angle. The front brake was also disappointing: it was spongy to dose, somewhat toothless in its effect. Then there is the telescopic fork, which hits the block with heavy braking or short, hard hits with a metallic crack. On the racetrack, the actually good shock absorber also reaches its tuning limits. And yet, the many VTRs in race training or in the starter lists of BoT and Zuvi races prove that the Honda has talented athletes. In order to awaken these talents, MOTORRAD tried various accessories with ABE.
Everyday problems like the blocked tank ventilation are relatively easy to fix – cleaning the ventilation duct usually helps. Indirect relief from thirst is provided by large plastic tanks (page 27) or fuel-saving carburetor kits that also improve the performance characteristics (for example from Kainzinger, Tel. 06202/963298 or Moto Parts, 02151/5573701, both without ABE).
If there are problems with the ground clearance, in addition to removing the long fearful knobs, a good chassis adjustment helps: the dangerously grazing right exhaust manifold prevents the spring base on the telescopic fork from being raised as far as possible (no ring visible) and a correct fork oil level (125-130 millimeters) . Lo and behold: progressive compression of the fork, no bottoming out, no bend sticking out and no tendency to kickback. The Honda gains agility by lifting the rear on the strut (underlay the threaded spindle of the upper strut mount). Footrests and silencers only touch very lightly, even when you are racing. If you want to improve ground clearance and save weight, you can use the ABE silencers presented (page 25).
Other spring elements had to prove themselves on the racetrack and on bumpy roads in the Spanish hinterland (page 25). To improve the brake, which this time showed itself to be in astonishingly good shape, MOTORRAD tried out various ABE pads, each of which had to complete a 500-kilometer Alpine pass trip (page 26). Tips for sports use: Racing pads or original Honda RC 45 pads (both without ABE).
Performance fetishists will find what they are looking for, for example, from Christian Mende (05153/963001), Gerd Thiel (06203/17169) or Hedeshi Ijuin (Moriwaki, 02131/276497), who offer everything that breathes the VTR’s performance beyond 140 hp.

Phoenix-Remus VTR 1000 F – long-distance racer with simple means

Phoenix-Remus VTR 1000 F.

The Phoenix-Remus VTR 1000 F provides an impressive example of how the somewhat gray-bodied Honda can be turned into not only a racer, but also an eye-catcher with comparatively little effort. The motorcycle shown is largely standard. Of course, the in-house composite wheels with magnesium star, six inches wide at the rear, are eye-catching, which are intended to reduce both the unsprung and rotating masses. The raising of the rear of the vehicle by placing the upper strut mount underneath is also visually striking – a measure that benefits handling and ground clearance. The raised silencers not only look good, they also give the Honda some extra muscles (page 25). And then of course there is the impressive PVM eight-piston brake system with its rock-solid stability. In the tested configuration, it bites almost too mercilessly with minimal hand strength. But do not worry: the customer can determine how his brakes are set up by choosing the components. Not only are hand brake cylinders with different brake pistons available, but also different cranked levers. The aforementioned modifications were sufficient for the Phoenix-Remus VTR 1000 F to take second place in the BoT class and the Twelfth place overall. Contact: Phoenix-Remus, 0241-56 88 222.

HERU-Honda VTR 995 – Everything that works

HERU Honda VTR 995

The HERU-Honda VTR 995 can hardly be seen to be related to the production model. The slim full fairing and the beautiful hump evoke memories for other reasons – like the front fender, they come from the Grand Prix rocket NSR 500. What a machine: so small, so filigree, so narrow. In the service of sportiness, the fairing not only creates a slim silhouette with excellent aerodynamics, but also space to clamp the handlebars below the fork bridge. In connection with the spring strut, which is underlaid by a clean milled part, not only does the handling improve, but there is also a greater proportion of weight on the multi-part Fischer front wheel (with magnesium star and TuV). The HERU-VTR also dropped a lot of pounds (target empty weight: 165 kilograms). Much of it is made of carbon fiber-kevlar laminate, including the tank, which has been enlarged in volume. Kevlar brake lines, the self-made rear frame or the tiny DE headlights reduce the weight, as does the two-in-one exhaust system “Powered by Mende”. The engine was also affected. After igniting a few power levels, the tuner promises stable 135 horses. In order to transport these to the rear wheel as reaction-free as possible, HERU came up with stiffening plates between the swing arm bearing and the frame, which also support the rear and high-level footrests. Further highlights: An electric water pump ensures constant temperatures in the power station, the fork and shock absorber have carbon fiber splash protection and much more. A great motorcycle. White Power, Progressive fork springs + fork oil Wilbers Products Telephone 05921 / 6057Federn 169 Mark Oil 24.90 Mark A set of progressively wound fork springs, one liter of fork oil, viscosity 10 (series: also progressively wound springs and 10 oil) Installation: Unscrew the fork plug over the adjusting screw of the spring base, then remove the washers, spacer sleeve and spring. To change the oil, pour out the old oil through the upper opening. Assemble in reverse order, air cushion 130 millimeters (without spring). A difference to the standard condition is hardly noticeable. However, the white power oil makes the damping a little tighter. Ohlins “Type 4” shock absorberZupin Motorsport, phone 08669/857601650 Mark shock absorber with adjustable rebound and compression damping, hydraulically adjustable spring base, mounting kit, installation instructionsThe shock absorber is sensitive, has a huge adjustment range and enormous reserves. The rear wheel optimally absorbs bumps – a real improvement overall. Also advantageous: simple attachment, wear parts exchangeable. The hydraulic spring base adjustment is recommended for frequent changes between solo and two-person operation. The inexpensive counterpart with a slight locknut setting is sufficient for sports riders. Technoflex »Competition« shock absorberWilbers ProductsPhone 05921/60571199 Mark shock absorber with adjustable rebound and compression damping (high and low speed), mounting kit, installation instructions The Technoflex offers the same advantages as the Ohlins shock absorber. In addition to the usual high-speed compression adjustment, it also has a separate low-speed setting that noticeably affects driving comfort without any loss of driving behavior. This protects the material as well as the stamina and concentration of the driver. Important: High and low-speed clicks tend to be set similarly. A real recommendation.
