Airbag vests for motorcyclists? They’ve been around for a few years. What should be so innovative and new about the offroad jackets? Many of us probably rarely or never get into the terrain by motorcycle. And even then – we would probably only do jumps of several meters involuntarily. The challenge for an off-road airbag is to differentiate between jumping and falling.

To do this, sensors in the airbag vest analyze the pilot’s movements in real time and compare parameters such as acceleration, lean angle and GPS with one another. From the developers as “abnormal” Defined results then lead to the airbag being deployed within 50 milliseconds. An algorithm that the developers worked on together with the Italian off-road accessories brand UFO Plast determines which driver movements are considered normal and which are abnormal.

Airbag vest compulsory at Dakar

The airbag then fills its chambers to a protective volume of 18 liters using two 32 cm³ GG-E cartridges. A back protector (SAS-TEC Level 2) is located above the airbag for additional protection.

After the death of two motorcyclists at the 2020 Dakar, the FIM (Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme; in German: Motorradweltverband) stipulated that airbag protection systems will be mandatory for participating motorcyclists in the future. The first airbag system for off-road drivers brought Alpinestars last year. The Alpinestars Tech-Air Off-Road was tested as a prototype during the Dakar 2019/2020.
