Motorcycle manufacturer Honda has patented a new variable valve control. Obviously, the Japanese want to compete against the BMW ShiftCam system. The first use could be in the new Fireblade.

A new variable valve control was patented for the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer in the USA under the patent number US 2019/0003352 A1. The patent was published on January 3, 2019. In the struggle for more and more performance with increasingly severe emission values, variable valve control seems to be a good way to go. With the new S 1000 RR with ShiftCam technology, BMW has now shown what is possible with this in a super sports car. With its variable valve control, which is also used in the new BMW Boxer, the new 1,000cc four-cylinder produces 207 hp and 113 Nm in compliance with all currently applicable limit values. The speed limit is 14,600 rpm.

The current Honda Fireblade has 192 hp and 114 Nm torque – respectable values ββand enough power for every road driver. But the competition offers more on paper and on the slopes. Here Honda now seems to be following the specifications of the competitors.

The next Fireblade could produce up to 220 hp.
The now patented valve control, which is also associated with a Fireblade on the patent drawings, shows a system similar to BMW ShiftCam technology. The four-valve engine relies on fixed-speed rocker arms for valve actuation – so far, bucket tappets have been installed in the Fireblade. In addition, there are two cam profiles for each valve on the inlet and outlet side – one sharp and one tame. On the one hand, this enables low emissions and high torque to be achieved at low speeds; at higher speeds, the valves can be opened wider and longer, which brings more power.
To switch between the cam profiles, the camshafts are shifted in the axial direction with a system controlled by oil pressure and electromagnetic valves. The hollow-drilled rocker arm axles operate two pins that alternately engage in grooves in the camshaft. The control modules for this are located on the left in the cylinder head. What works with the new valve control remains to be seen. In some media there is speculation about a new Fireblade with up to 220 hp.
