To relieve drivers of electric models from fear of range, the new system relies on replacement batteries.

With the auxch batteries, the charging stations can serve as a buffer for local energy production from wind or solar and thus relieve the grid.

With exchangeable batteries against fear of range
A big brake shoe when it comes to electromobility is the fear of range. Honda has now presented a battery exchange system at the CES that promises more mobility for electric models.

The Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Honda had already presented the PCX electric scooter at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2017. The corresponding mobility concept has now followed at the CES in Las Vegas. So far, drivers of electric models have lived latently with range anxiety, but Honda wants to take this away from them with its new battery replacement concept.
The core of the new approach is to replace empty batteries instead of recharging them. The PCX large scooter is equipped with two removable battery packs for this purpose. They can be refueled conventionally at a socket, but the driver has to be prepared for a corresponding waiting time. Unsatisfactory, as Honda thinks.

Full batteries are kept in so-called exchange towers.
The new idea is to set up so-called battery replacement modules across the board. Those who need electricity can drive up there, remove the battery from their vehicle and simply replace it with an already charged unit from the exchange module. The empty battery remains in the module and is charged for the next user. In this way, the range of electrically powered models can be extended as required. As long as the batteries are in the charging towers, they can also be used as buffer storage for local energy producers (solar or wind power) and thus relieve the public grid.
The charging exchange modules are of course around the clock “open” and could also be available to third-party users, provided that a battery standard is agreed. Honda sees scope for the capacity of the batteries that can be used for this system. The batteries currently have a capacity of 1 kWh. In addition, the replacement batteries could also be used for other applications – stationary or mobile – as well as for other types of vehicle.
A first field test with the replacement batteries will start in December 2018 together with Panasonic in Indonesia. Several dozen loading towers are to be built in three regions at different locations.
