The SP-1 goes away; long live the SP-2. The eldest was the subject of much ink, especially for certain ambiguities. In competition, pampered by the HRC, the VTR SP-1 won in Endurance and Superbike. The one we found at the dealership was imperial on the road but paled when arriving on the circuit: heavy and physical, it was capricious to enter the curves – the rear swept the track on strong braking and ground clearance insufficient scraped half the machine on the tarmac… not very effective. Infuriating given the price of the machine (100,000 Frs). The SP-2 comes to clean up. The front axle closed, we refocused the masses, changed the swingarm for a lighter, more rigid, and even much classier model..

The engine has also been slightly revised. Result: + 4 hp, – 5 kg, but above all, the machine has become much more rigorous and agile. The front axle perfectly guides this civilized Superbike which obeys faithfully the orders of the pilot. The traction is excellent and allows to squirt of the turn while being already concentrated on the following one. As the machine obeys the finger and the eye, the pace goes up and now, the SP-2 allows you to improvise, ideal for blind turns. Ground clearance is finally adequate and the braking phenomenal. The engine is more expressive than on the SP-1, powerful and even nasty from 8 to 10,500 rpm. Honda didn’t go wrong in revisiting the VTR-SP-1, but your wallet will be less enthusiastic. In spite of all these improvements, it should be noted that the SP-2 arrived at the bottom of the classification during the comparison “special sports” 2002 and 2003 of Moto-journal. Still, its driving is exhilarating and reassuring, not to mention its image: the SP-2 HRC shares the domination of the Superbike championship with (and against) Ducati.
