Apart from a very slight facelift in 2006, the 1800 Goldwing remained unchanged since 2001. The 2012 version did not change much technically but its fairly marked restyling gave it a welcome touch of freshness. You will immediately notice that the Goldwing collection is now dressed in a two-tone color – the revised fairing panels contrast sharply with the dominant color. Two slender nostrils cut into the fork crown and the hindquarters became remarkably sharp. The lighthouse-suitcase set has become much sharper at the edge of the salient.
The huge Honda liner, the pinnacle of road refinement, places such trust in its bewitching 6-cylinder flat that it doesn’t touch it for its 2012 evolution. Besides, who would find fault … The GL 1800 prefers focus on improving its transcontinental capabilities. In the list of improvements, there is a new GPS with the possibility of programming its routes and sharing them online, iPod and USB MP3 connectivity, new Hi-Fi SRS CS Auto three-dimensional surround, a more comfortable passenger seat, readjusted suspensions, reinforced wind protection, and suitcases with increased capacity (this now reaches 150 liters). The new design of the rear part incorporating air extractors that reduce aerodynamic drag provides better stability. In addition, new front and rear suspension settings ensure top-notch handling..
This Goldwing is entering its second decade with eternal serenity. Made again in Japan, its price will remain damn generous but its approval without competition and imperiously delicious.
The history of the Goldwing:
1972: the origins
A team of engineers is formed with, at its head, the famous Soichiro Irimajiri, who created the famous 5 and 6-cylinder racing cylinders of the 1960s. His team will develop the M1, an ultra-secret prototype designed to explore the limits of the Grand Touring concept applied to motorcycles. The M1 already had a flat 6 cylinder and a shaft drive, characteristics that would be taken over a few years later on the Gold Wing.
1975: GL 1000 Gold Wing
The first Gold Wing is a revolution, opening up new perspectives for lovers of long-distance travel. Powered by a revolutionary 999cc liquid-cooled flat 4-cylinder, the GL1000 offers performance and a level of refinement never before achieved in the world of two-wheelers. From then on, Gold Wing owners will redefine the basics of Grand Touring, driving further and more comfortably than ever, reassured by a machine which, since its early days, has enjoyed a reputation for exceptional reliability. In 1976, Honda celebrated this success with a Gold Wing “Limited Edition” while in 1979, the first Gold Wing production plant was opened in the United States in response to the fact that 80% of the machines produced so far were exported to this country.
1980: GL 1100 Gold Wing & GL 1100 Gold Wing Interstate
Where the GL1000 defied categorization with its blend of sporty performance and top-flight comfort, the GL1100 – the result of 5 years of user research – clearly positions the Gold Wing as the ultimate LA GT. Its engine, increased to 1,085 cm3, favors torque rather than power, while the extended wheelbase allows more stability and more room for the rider and his passenger. Air-assisted suspensions set new standards in road quality as the Interstate version introduces for the first time the notion of a “turnkey” GT with its full fairing, suitcases and original top case.
1982: GL 1100 Gold Wing Aspencade
With the Aspencade, Honda is adding the notion of luxury to that of Grand Touring. The original equipment abounds, like the digital dashboard, the stereo system, the CB or the integrated pneumatic compressor.
1985: GL 1200 Limited Edition
The year 1985 was marked by the cessation of production of the standard GL1200 (without fairing), in favor of the GL1200 Limited Edition, a complete machine with its electronic fuel injection system, its 4-speaker audio system, its regulator. speed, auto-adjustable rear suspension, on-board computer and metallic gold paint.
1988: GL 1500 Gold Wing
In 1984, a new team of engineers began to work on the future Gold Wing. Their specifications are demanding, to say the least, since the new machine had to be better in all aspects: running quiet, flexibility, power and road handling. Thousands of hours were spent testing 15 machines and 60 prototypes, which at the time was the most extensive development ever in Honda history. These efforts will materialize in the form of a luxurious 6-cylinder machine, a machine so accomplished that it would set the standards in the category for more than a decade..
2001: GL 1800 Gold Wing
After 8 years of development, the GL1800 carries the Gold Wing name even higher. Designed by the team of Masanori Aoki, whose track record includes machines as outstanding as the CBR250RR, CBR400RR or CBR600F3, the Gold Wing 1800 caused a sensation: “My job was to add more pleasure to the machine, to build a Gold Wing capable of acceleration and dynamic qualities that are more generally associated with sports motorcycles ”explains Aoki.
