Very endearing by its engine declined from the sporty VTR, royal in travel thanks to a perfect comfort, the Varadero began to show the blow vis-a-vis the competitors in terms of handling … and consumption. Honda is giving it a little facelift this year. The Varadero is more angular, appears thinner. The front indicators are now integrated, the dashboard is more modern and has an on-board computer which offers the possibility of controlling instantaneous consumption. Annoying point on the first XLV 1000, the tank finally adopts a cap mounted on a hinge – practical and essential! Protection has been improved thanks to work in a wind tunnel and an adjustable bubble appears. For road holding, the good old recipes remain relevant: stiffened frame, revisited suspensions, and engine directly attached to the frame. It pays and has to be paid: the Varadero is safer but has gained overweight: + 15 kgs! It also gains the injection (and a little more flexibility), the compression ratio increases, but the big contribution that changes everything is the arrival of a sixth report. The driving position is unchanged and we find the ease and handling of the old. Braking is excellent, especially thanks to the CBS system. On the motorway, the protection is bluffing: you can cross for hours at very high speed. The sixth allows the engine to finally calm down, and to gain 1 L per 100 .. This big trail is very stable when driving fast, even very fast; this is slightly swayed by a little sway when the saddlebags are in place. Faithful to the Honda spirit, the Varadero admirably combines pleasure, comfort and efficiency … Although there is still some progress to be made to take pride in the tranquility of the BMW R 1150 GS.
