Limited special series, a new variant of the FTR 1200 and some new models with a touch of bygone times expand the model portfolio of US manufacturers Indian in the 2020 model year. “Don’t call them cute”: Even the entry-level model into the Indian world is a full-blown 1000 model – with an aluminum frame and a clean, extremely unique design. The centerpiece is the water-cooled 60-degree V2 with four overhead camshafts and 78 hp. Clean: toothed belt as rear-wheel drive. 999 cc is based on a little less drilling than the standard Scout. That’s around 60 cubic inches, hence the addition “Sixty”. Long and low, long and low, guarantees a cool US style with a low seat height.

Despite the modern 1133 cm3 V2, the Scout emphasizes tradition: in 1920 the first “scout” appeared. Today Indian is celebrating the milestone anniversary with the “Limited Edition Scout 100th Anniversary” limited to 750 copies worldwide. This anniversary special series is painted in “Indian Motorcycle Red” in the style of the original Scout, with gold decoration and a 100-year anniversary plaque. A leather solo saddle, black wire-spoke rims, “beach bar” handlebars, luggage racks and chrome-plated details round off the look back on wheels.

This stylish US iron brings out the best of Indian’s Scout modular system: Knobby 16-inch tires, chassis and dohc-V2 without cooling fins are identical. But capped fenders and freely swinging saddle emphasize the bobber look. The “Twenty” model pays homage to the 1920s Scout with more shiny chrome and a tall ten-inch apehanger handlebar. In 2020 all Scouts have new floating calipers and master brake cylinders for better braking performance, Scout Bobbers now roll on Pirelli MT 60 RS tires.

An Indian on the warpath: With 123 hp from 1203 cm3, a tubular space frame, upside-down fork and angled central spring strut, the FTR attacks established European naked bikes. Fully LED lights, cruise control and USB fast charging connections for smartphones are modern. The 95 hp version serves as the basis for A2 driving license holders. An FTR 1200 has been completing the 50,000-kilometer endurance test at MOTORRAD since autumn 2019. First impression: The fat, sporty US bike would need more grip tires in the rain.

Indian goes sport: The FTR 1200 S was a sensation in 2019: the most powerful US bike, the first with traction and wheelie control. Yeah Everything garnished with top torque values and inspired by the flat-track racers that are so popular in the USA. Indian won the US championship several times with the FTR 750. The “Race Replica” with its stylish three-color metal flake paint is based on this. The S version always offers three driving modes, ABS that can be switched off, fully adjustable suspension elements and a high-contrast 4.3-inch TFT cockpit.

An FTR as a scrambler to stir up dust. Spoked wheels with aluminum rims and coarse-tread Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires look good on the rally and create a trendy aura: tart and masculine. This also applies to the gray tank with the Indian head logo, the brown seat, LED headlights and the 50 millimeter higher “ProTaper” handlebars. The modern 123-PS-V2-Kurzhuber remained unchanged. As usual with Indian, a speed cutter also brakes this FTR derivative electronically to a speed of 193.

Indian wants to know. This is what the Challenger stands for. The cool excavator wears a shark nose panel (“Haifischmaul”) with electrically adjustable window and LED lights. The centerpiece is the completely new, water-cooled “PowerPlus” -V2 in an aluminum frame. From 1768 cm³ (108 cubic inches) it gets a full 122 hp and 178 Newton meters! Hey, this is the most powerful US tourer ever. 43 USD fork and radial Brembo brakes should make the power easy to ride. This is ensured even more by a servo clutch, three driving modes (rain, standard, sport), cornering ABS, lean angle-dependent traction control, high-grip Metzeler Cruisetec tires and cruise control. Further insignia of the stylish US tourer are hydraulic valve clearance compensation, 100 watt audio and navigation system. Connectivity via Bluetooth and USB connection are a matter of honor. Classically inspired, interpreted in a modern way, is the sloping line, which ends in two 34-liter parallelogram suitcases. The hammer shark is said to weigh a whopping 381 kilos when dry.

Statement on wheels: the Chieftain, in German chief, is India’s classically inspired luxury excavator. And that complete with huge, handlebar-mounted Streamline fairing, curved sheet metal fenders with an illuminated Indian head on the front fender, hard-shell suitcases and lavish chrome trim. A matter of honor for the Classic, which is painted in “Thunder Black”, is the 100 watt stereo system, LED lights, tire pressure control, aluminum frame, cruise control and three driving modes for the 1811 cm3 Thunder Stroke V2.

Yes, these shapes cite the Chief from 1940 with characteristic curved fenders. They consist of solid sheet steel, panniers and cowboy saddle with fringes made of real leather. Both Chiefs, including the dark Dark Horse, are powered by the Thunder Stroke bumper V2 with 1811 cm3. It once imitated side-controlled cylinders, but has two overhead valves per combustion chamber and three camshafts below. New for 2020 is the Springfield chassis with a steeper steering head and adjustable shock absorber.

Chrome sweet chrome: The Springfield (Indian sat there until 1953) with sparkling chrome jewelry has, like the Chief, vintage leather saddles, crash bars and three front lights. Now the Springfield passed on its chassis to the Chief, including 20 millimeters more suspension travel in the rear for more comfort. Hard-shell cases with quick-release fasteners are practical; the huge pane can be dismantled quickly. In addition to the Chieftain Classic and the two Chief versions, the Springfield retains the previous Thunder-Stroke-111-V2 as the fourth model.

Bigger is better. According to this motto, the modified Thunder-Stroke-116-V2 drives the eternal arms race between Indian and Harley to the extreme: as the king of displacement with 1890 cm3. A value that deliberately moves closer to Indian’s founding year 1901. As usual, the gloomy Dark Horse version completely dispenses with chrome jewelry. Further features: deep-seated saddlebags, “Rogue Gunfighter” solo saddle, twelve-inch mini apehanger handlebars, elegantly milled wheels and buckets of matt black even on the hard-shell suitcases.

Excavators with a large 19-inch front wheel are not only popular in the USA. This drive should be powerful, calm and confident thanks to its 1.9 liter displacement and almost 170 Newton meters. 80 cm3 more make the air-cooled Thunder-Stroke-111-V2 the 116. By the way: All Indian models over 1400 cubic meters come with an extended warranty of five years. Compliment. “Bigger, stronger, better”: Indian likes his motto in the role of being a thorn in the flesh of arch-rival Harley-Davidson. And so the Roadmaster is the Electra Glide from Indian: a full dresser with everything zipp and zapp, up to an XXL topcase (together with the hard shell suitcase 140 liters luggage volume) including a backrest for the passenger in wing chair format. Fat pounds meet the same torque from the 1890 cubic engine. With it, the rear cylinder is deactivated when idling at high temperatures. Heated leather seats front and rear, heated grips, electrically adjustable windows and adjustable air inlets on the front crash bars are indispensable: they supply fresh air on warm days, but can be closed when it’s cold. This league includes a 200-watt audio system with Bluetooth and the networked Ride Command infotainment system with a faster quad-core processor. Nothing there baroque, ultra-modern!
