In the history of Kawasaki, certain models have a reputation which is not blunted by time. Recently, it is the H2 that the brand has put back on the rails of the thrill of power. Now it’s the turn of the retro segment to be in the spotlight, with a key bike from the 70s: the 900 Z1. It was Kawa’s response to the famous Honda CB 750 Four. The neo-retro segment being particularly buoyant, the Greens launched their striking weapon: the Z 900 RS. And it smacks of success.
The look is perfect. From a distance, impossible to distinguish the base of the Z 900, very typical manga and adrenaline. Up close … neither. The Kawa designers have done a beautiful cosmetic job, constantly recalling the illustrious ancestor of the 70s. The Z 900 RS, for Retro Sport, instantly plunges us into the past. The round headlight, the old-fashioned counters, the large and flat tank, fins added to the cylinder head, the slender saddle finished with a retro rear end, a more vintage-style exhaust, and this replica color of the Z1 – any contest to perfect the identity of this revival. Unlike the Yamaha XSR, which is hard to see the link with the XS of yesteryear, the Kawasaki imitates its venerable inspiration very well. There is only the imposing radiator which seems out of time. We will not be entitled to spoke rims, but the design of the wheelset still has cachet.
The dress will thrill more than one. Below are all the advantages of the Z 900 streetfighter; and even more. The pilot will be able to have generous fun with a chassis combining a steel trellis frame, inverted fork, dynamic behavior significantly improved since the Z 800 and a fiery engine. However, the RS offered itself some modifications. Braking level, there are radial calipers with 4 pistons and not axial as on the Z 900. The 4 cylinder loses some horsepower, going from 125 to 111 nags. The peak power is however reached earlier. ABS is still present and on the traction side, a big kick in Akashi’s roadsters with the appearance of traction control. The Z 650, 900 and 1000 are all without it. The gear ratios have been slightly revised to better match the spirit of the Z 900 RS.
We can attack at will with the Z 900 RS but why not roll up old school style with a personality like that. Especially since the driving position promises to be less incisive than on the standard Z 900. The neo-retro takes advantage of a different handlebar and the toe clips change position, 20 mm lower and as much forward. It will be necessary to accept 5 kilos more and a price certainly beefier than the original roadster..
Since the shutdown of the W 800, no motorcycle has defended the kawasaki bastion of nostalgia. The Z 900 RS arrives at the right time and in a very nice way. Modern performance with the look of one of the most famous motorcycles of the 70s, and the fashion to wear it all. The machine doesn’t even need to show off; the aura of the elder will be enough to turn heads.
