Kymco AK 550 i ABS in the driving report
Sporty large scooter
The Kymco AK 550 i ABS dares a new, relatively sporty entry into the upper class of scooters. How does the sporty large scooter ride??
To anticipate it right away: The model name AK, which caused slight irritation when the Taiwanese manufacturer presented the new top model, has – of course – nothing to do with the assault rifle or the party slogan that inspired the headline. Rather, it alludes to the company’s 50th anniversary and simply means Anniversario Kymco, i.e. anniversary model. Although not an anniversary, there was another special feature at the official launch of the Kymco AT.K 550 i ABS in the Bavarian Upper Palatinate: In addition to an extended lap through woods and meadows, the journalists who had traveled were allowed to chase the 550 a few laps over a go-kart track.

Tight tuning of the chassis pleases
Even for a sporty scooter this is not exactly the ancestral habitat, but the Kymco AK 550 i ABS cuts a good figure there too. In addition to the stable and easily controllable brakes, the lush freedom of lean angle of the brave marching twin was particularly surprising. The tight tuning of the chassis is also pleasing, although the feedback from the front wheel leaves something to be desired. But back on the road that doesn’t really matter. There other things count, for example the cultivated run of the row win. For slippery conditions there is a rain mode that cuts the power from 51 to 47 hp, but there is no real traction control.
Cockpit with smartphone function
There is also enough space behind the high window for tall pilots, a full-face hat plus some small items fits into the helmet compartment, and there are also two compartments in the leg shield. The cockpit has car-like dimensions and offers a special treat that should especially delight smartphone junkies. The same can be networked with the middle segment of the cockpit via the Noodoe app. Then the Kymco AK 550 i ABS finds out “just in time” when there is something new in the digital world. But not only that, the low price of 9,799 euros also makes it an alternative in its segment.
