In total, the police recorded 58,191 bodily accidents in 2014 (+ 2.4% compared to 2013) and 73,048 injuries (+ 3.5%) including 26,635 hospitalized (+ 2.6%).

The share of foreign drivers in the statistics

Site readers – who, as everyone knows, ask themselves a few more questions than others – are numerous to question us about the share of foreign vehicles in French statistics, France being, by its geographical location, at the both holiday destination and country crossed by European tourists.

A first element of response is found in the 2013 Road Safety report, according to which "the share of these vehicles in traffic is estimated at 6% (excluding motorcycles). They constitute 2.3% of motor vehicles involved in accidents injuries and 4% of motor vehicles involved in fatal accidents. 178 people were killed in an accident involving a vehicle registered abroad in 2013, or 5.4% of the fatality ".

Passenger vehicles registered abroad constitute "1.8% of passenger vehicles involved in bodily accidents and 2.5% of passenger vehicles involved in fatal accidents", the report continues, stressing that they represent, with "26.9 billion kilometers traveled, 1.5% of journeys made by passenger vehicles".

Heavy goods vehicles and coaches registered abroad constitute "13.5% of vehicles in their category involved in bodily accidents and 16% of those involved in fatal accidents (29% of journeys of all weights heavy vehicles and coaches) ", and motorcycles registered abroad constitute" 1.5% of motorcycles involved in bodily accidents and 2.7% of those involved in fatal accidents ".

The number of motorcyclists and scooter riders (over 50 cc) killed on the roads in 2014 (625 including 238 during a fall alone and 387 during a collision with another vehicle) remains stable compared to 2013 (-1% ) but shows a decrease of -34% compared to 2000, while that of mopeds (less than 50 cc) increases slightly (+ 4%) with an overall decrease of -64% in 14 years.

The share of bikers and scooters in European road fatalities is logically the highest in the countries where the most motorized two-wheelers are sold (Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, France and Italy are above the European average of 15%), with the exception of Greece and Lithuania (without "h", gentlemen analysts from the National Road Safety Observatory).

13.4 million points withdrawn in 2014

It should also be noted that among the drivers of motorized two-wheelers who died on the roads last year, 12% of mopeds and 3% of bikers killed did not wear a helmet….

All vehicle categories combined, the number of points withdrawn in 2014 was lower than in 2013 (-7%) while at the same time traffic offenses increased by 17.6% (alcohol + 13%, hit and run +23 % and narcotics + 44%).

The points lost were naturally linked mainly to non-compliance with legal speeds (7.4 million) and priority and traffic rules (3.6 million), the telephone held in hand (1 million), alcohol (900 000), belt (400,000) and narcotics (100,000).

In total, 77,288 driving licenses were invalidated (-9.3% compared to 2013) including 14,663 probationary licenses (-12.5%).
