What if the excursion leads to the swimming lake? Or if you spontaneously want to make someone a pillion passenger? What to do with an additional helmet or swimwear? Answer: on the driver’s back or on the rear of the machine. Most likely in a rucksack with the rider, that makes sense, but which luggage is best suited for the motorcycle?

Also something for self-confessed touring riders

The market offers a large number of lashing systems with which bags, packing rolls and other items can be fastened and transported on the motorcycle. These are the typical take-away items that are placed in the shopping cart just before the checkout. No wonder, because the investment for tensioning straps, rubber hooks, nets or luggage spiders is limited. It starts at two euros for a simple strap. And even more complex lashing systems rarely cost more than 20 euros. In addition, the compact tensioners can usually be stowed well under the bench or in the bag or packing roll that is to be transported when not in use. Such a mobile luggage solution is not only of interest to notorious suitcase refusers, but also to self-confessed touring riders. Because even die-hard suitcase fans often voluntarily forego a topcase as rear luggage, because tightly lashed soft luggage offers the safer solution, especially when walking hard and off-road.

Important: what should be transported?

MOTORRAD has carefully examined a selection of twelve different lashing systems and tested them in practice. The problem with this is that the systems are very different – one network, then only bands – and in some cases it is difficult to compare them. Example: Lashing straps with tested safety locks tie packing rolls with a non-slip surface securely to the motorcycle, but they are only of limited use for transporting a full-face helmet. In this case, a net is the right choice. With this, however, very heavy pieces of luggage can often not be fixed well because the rubbers are too elastic. Buyers should therefore think about what they want to transport beforehand.

The real practical benefit can only be seen in the versatility, i.e. the sum of all possible applications. As you can see from the test field, there are real jack-of-all-trades who stand out as exemplary Sherpa tools. You can see where the pitfalls of the individual lashing systems are in detail on the following pages, because not all hooks are the same, and not just belts. The spontaneous grab in the shop can just as quickly turn into a mistake because the lashing system does not harmonize well with the machine and the item of luggage. So our tip: always do a test drive with full luggage before a long journey. Not that the concentrated load backfires.

Looked closely

Really coiled. After counting on and off the individual lashing systems, you lose track of things. If the tensioning strap made of too thin and soft textile fabric also turns into a tapeworm, it gets annoying. Just imagine: the others are already sitting on the motorcycle or at the hotel bar, and you are still fiddling with your luggage. This is stupid. It is similarly stupid when there are many hooks, but none of the things can be hooked anywhere on the machine. Because the openings are too small or the hook itself is too bulky for the eyes.

Such and similar problems can of course be caused by the motorcycle, for example when a fully boarded sports machine slippery prevents any docking. But there are also solutions for this. When buying lashing systems, particular attention should be paid to ensuring that they are of sufficient length. Normally packed packing rolls with a volume of 50 to 60 liters can quickly reach a circumference of a good meter. If you want to tighten rubbers crosswise or if the hooks have to be attached to the pillion footrests, 150 centimeters is hardly enough. Another tip: It is better to use a third strap to prevent it from slipping sideways. Tapes that are too long, on the other hand, create protrusions that have to be laboriously knotted in order not to flutter or even get tangled in the bike.

With elastic rubber bands, luggage nets and spiders, on the other hand, overhangs are not an issue – but they often do not generate the necessary tension and can only be readjusted using an appropriate selection of attachment points. Before every journey, therefore, always shake the luggage firmly and check that all protrusions are secured.

That’s right? The luggage spider legs should be sorted well before use.

Two test bikes were available. As expected, the Honda Crosstourer as a typical travel machine with luggage rack and pannier racks offered many attachment points, while the Suzuki GSR 750, as a sporty naked bike, was deliberately chosen as a problem child in terms of luggage storage. A 50 liter roll (60 x 30 centimeters) was filled with the usual equipment for a normal weekend trip, including street shoes, chain spray, sleeping bags, i.e. hard, bulky and soft objects. The bag, which weighs around ten kilograms, served as standard baggage for the test drives – thus equal opportunities for all lashing systems. Correctly lashed, markings were made on the roller in order to be able to document any slipping after the test drive.

The approximately 30-kilometer test lap led over winding country roads. With quick changes of lean angle and sharp braking maneuvers, the testers checked how securely the standard luggage remained fixed. Other important evaluation criteria for repeated putting on and taking off were attachment to the machine and protection against damage (such as scratches from hooks, buckles, etc.). In addition, the variability (sufficient volume to be able to transport different types of luggage), the handling (locks, securing protrusions etc.) and the quality.

To be able to do without suitcase or softbag systems and prefer to use more compact straps, nets or rubbers – okay. Nevertheless, a few tips and recommendations are allowed. In particular, sporty motorcycles of the newer design often no longer have a serious luggage rack ex works. Storing luggage securely and firmly is then a difficult act, even with clever lashing systems. Solo riders are therefore advised to convert the pillion seat into a luggage compartment using carrier plates. But also touring machine drivers with passengers can expand their often sparse standard luggage rack with extra racks. Baggage specialists like Hepco & Becker or SW-Motech have many racks that are specifically tailored to the motorcycle, on which luggage can be easily and securely lashed and which cost between 60 and 150 euros. Depending on the load, extensions are advisable in order to increase the support surface. The advantage of these retrofit luggage racks: luggage can usually be secured on them using sensibly placed lashing eyes so that no hooks, straps or fasteners on the lashing systems scratch or damage parts of the motorcycle. Foils also protect against scratches (at Louis: 4.99 euros). Waterproof packing rolls are generally a good luggage solution compared to top cases, because they can be placed more favorably with a significantly lower weight.

Conclusion

An old saying comes true: do not save at the wrong end! The price difference between the lashing systems presented here is a maximum of 15 euros, i.e. less than one refueling. The Rok Straps clear away completely, are outstanding in their value. But there are also good luggage solutions for less than seven euros (Polo, Joubert, Hein Gericke and Touratech). And even the BGS tensioning straps, which cost just five euros, are not only okay for absolute penny pinchers. But it’s not about the money. In the case of fiddly or less secure systems, other values ​​are quickly lost: the nerves – and under certain circumstances even the luggage.
