IDM Schleiz: Grunwald delivers top results
At the 2017 IDM weekend, the Schleizer triangle was neither new territory for the Suzuki Mayer team from Passau nor for its driver Luca Grunwald. However, the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 is still quite new and had to be prepared for the track as quickly as possible.

(Press release) All around the triangle was the motto of the International German Motorcycle Championship IDM last weekend. For the third race of the season, the paddock pitched its tents in Thuringia and was at the start on the Schleizer Dreieck, where the drivers sometimes do their fast laps on otherwise publicly used roads. At the start of the IDM Superbike class, as always, the Suzuki Mayer team from Passau with its driver Luca Grunwald. The track was neither new territory for the team nor for the driver. However, the Suzuki GSX R 1000 is still new and had to be prepared for the track as quickly as possible.
“We were still on the Pannoniaring for two days”, report Grunwald and his team boss Thomas Mayer. Like all other Suzuki pilots, the Bavarian team is also on the road with the standard version of the newly launched motorcycle. Especially in the announced kit electronics, which may be used according to the new regulations of the IDM Superbike, they promise a lot. “The current electronics are of course designed for use in normal road traffic”, explains Mayer. “Kit electronics are already more based on racing. But everyone tries to get the best out of what they currently have available. And when the kit electronics is there, you try to get the best out of it. With a test like this between races, you simply have more time to try things. On a race weekend there is no time for things out of sequence, as the driver pulls the cable most of the time.”
Luca Grunwald continued the upward trend from the races in Zolder in the first race on the Schleizer Dreieck. He prevailed in his group of three, took a great fourth place and gave Suzuki the best IDM result to date. “It was very warm”, describes Grunwald his working day. “My start was okay, I should have been in 6th place. It was pretty close with Stefan Kerschbaumer, it was my turn, but I just couldn’t get past. At some point I tried the crowbar, losing a little time in the front. I was doing well then, but it couldn’t have been any faster. In the final phase, Mackels put down his motorcycle, which was well late when braking. Kerschbaumer had to get out as a result. So I was able to finish the last six or seven laps in peace.”
The second race started with temperatures approaching 30 degrees and became a correspondingly hot affair. Luca Grunwald got off to a good start and, like in the first race, joined the chasing group well. Until the end, the pilots could not follow through with their plans. The race was stopped because of a fall and a motorcycle on the racing line. For Grunwald it was 7th place. “It was warm”, so the first comment after crossing the finish line. “I had a few handling problems when it was quickly turned over. As a result, I lost a little in the group, but I was able to make up for it elsewhere. It’s a shame about the demolition. Nevertheless, we were able to achieve two good results.”
