The first half of 2015 has just ended and the French motorcycle market is barely showing, thanks to a fine month of June, a gain of + 0.8% compared to last year. The 125s are in good shape, the big cubes a little less. MNC takes stock.

The motorcycle market has yet to prove itself

Between January 1 and May 31, 2015, the French market for new motorcycles and scooters of "125 cc and over" totaled 63,634 registrations, i.e. 1,207 fewer than in the first five months of 2014 (-1.9 %: read our).

By sending its questionnaires to the main manufacturers from mid-June (read our Manufacturer Interviews in the first half of 2015), Site anticipated a slight decline in the market over the whole of the first half of 2015. But that was without counting the fortunate month of June !

Let us note first of all that with its 22 working days (against 20 in), the sixth month of this year was slightly advantaged from a purely statistical point of view: 10% more activity is far from be negligible. MNC also has 21 opening days of concessions compared to 20 in June 2014.

However, professionals will not shy away from their pleasure: their sales increased by + 12.2% compared to a month of June 2014 on the reserve (-1%). Among the 125 cc, the increase peaked last month at + 19.7%. In the larger engines, it stands at + 8.7%.

A brilliant month of June (+ 12.2%)

Besides the calendar, the heavens have been favorable: "the month of June 2015 was marked by generous sunshine and pronounced heat at the beginning of the month (the 4th and 5th) then again at the very end of the month (from the 29th)", Meteo-France analysis in its latest climate report.

Sworn enemy of two-wheelers – far ahead of the painful heatwave – the rain shone through its absence: "rainfall, which was scarce, was also infrequent over a large northern half of the country".

The month of June is therefore in line with the previous months: "after a near-normal March, April and May were marked by two early heat spikes, during which monthly records were recorded", observed weather specialists last month.

The "eco" specialists of the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) note for their part that "the French economy was dynamic in the first quarter (+ 0.6%)". Lower than the second trimester,"the rate of GDP growth should remain higher (+ 0.3%) than on average since spring 2011 (+ 0.1% per quarter)".

"While slowing, household consumption is once again the main factor behind this increase, supported by recent increases in purchasing power", specifies INSEE.

According to the IMF this time – International Monetary Fund, not to be confused with the International Motorcycling Federation! -, France’s GDP growth rate is expected to quadruple in 2015 and, according to their learned estimates, would expect + 1.16% compared to 2014.
