The rider Anthony West, for doping, has just been sentenced in the same case to an 18-month suspension, with retroactive effect to May 20, 2012. His 15th place in the 2013 Moto2 World Championship should therefore be canceled, as should his 16th place in 2012 and his 7th place in the 2012 Endurance World Cup in Qatar Endurance Racing Team 2.

Recall of facts

Tested positive for methylhexaneamine, a product banned in competition, during the, Anthony West was sentenced on October 29, 2012 to one month of suspension by the International Disciplinary Court (CDI) of the FIM (read).

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) then seized the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to request a 24-month suspension and the case had been submitted to a panel of three arbitrators: the Qatari Jan Paulsson, the Canadian Richard H. McLaren and the Israeli Efraim Barak. The hearing took place on August 21, 2013 in Lausanne (Switzerland), during which the parties were heard: the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Anthony West and the FIM represented by its legal officer, Richard Perret.

Energy drink…

In his defense, Anthony West admitted that he had been "a little negligent" and that three months maximum suspension would be proportionate to his fault, adding that in motorcycle sport "cheating involves more the equipment than the rider".

The Australian pilot also explained that he had ingested the prohibited substance while drinking "an energy drink (Mesomorph) which he had bought, prepared and consumed" in the belief that it did not contain prohibited substances, since it came from a nutrition store…

Mesomorph: "a wonderful explosive cocktail" !

Easily available online on athletic product sales sites, Mesomorph is touted as "a unique blend of highly synergistic agents that are guaranteed to propel your workout to a new level of intensity, and ensure your incredibly fast recovery ".

It would indeed be a "formidable explosive cocktail, including different catalysts in perfect dosage" such as "nitric oxide, a vasodilator allowing congestion and a blood flow which makes it possible to increase and strengthen the assimilation of the various nutrients of the NO Xplode in muscle fibers ".

But the arbitration panel considered that there had indeed been an anti-doping rule violation and that, according to the regulations in force, "the duration of the suspension could be a maximum of two years".

It considered that the circumstances of the case and the degree of the athlete’s fault, as well as the fact that methylhexaneamine is "a stimulant with short-term effects which are not negligible in competition", justified that an 18 month suspension period be imposed on the Australian pilot.

Subject to a possible appeal by one of the parties within 30 days to the Federal Tribunal of the Swiss Confederation and in accordance with what is provided for in the, all results obtained by Anthony West from May 20, 2012 until the end of its suspension (October 19, 2013) are therefore canceled.

The FIM announces that it "will consequently modify the classification of the FIM World Grand Prix Championship 2012 and 2013 in the Moto2 category, as well as that of the World Endurance Cup 2012". To be continued on MNC: stay connected !
