Superbike 2017: third title for Reiterberger in IDM
Injured, Markus Reiterberger quickly interrupted his second 2017 WorldSBK season to return to IDM, the German Superbike Championship he has just won for the third time on his favorite BMW S1000RR. What to bounce back at the highest level? Explanations.
Injured last year in the back – but also, no doubt, in his self-esteem for lack of excellent results! – at beautiful lousy in the middle of his first season in World Superbike, Markus Reiterberger had made the tough decision last April. A choice he doesn’t have to regret !
Invited on "his" German event, the n ° 21 has indeed proven that he had taken good care of his vertebrae – T10 and T12 fractured in Misano, ouch! -, by contesting with his former teammate Jordi Torres (BMW Althea) the "title" of best driver of S1000RR on the grounds of the manufacturer BMW.
A small feat that hides another, more silly: last weekend, the n ° 21 also participated in the fifth round of the German Superbike Championship (Internationale Deutsche Motorradmeisterschaft, IDM), organized on the sidelines of the world championship..
"The Lausitzring weekend was busy for us", testifies the German driver: "between the races of the world championship and those of the IDM, I covered 140 laps". What to reassure his fans – and his future employers? – on his state of health !
Package for the WSBK 2017, "Reiti" quickly found refuge within the Van Zon Remeha team. Just in time, in fact, to compete for the entire IDM 2017 season! In May, during the opening round of the Nurburgring, he quickly regained his marks: second behind his teammate in the first round, he won in second.
Then, the IDM 2013 and 2015 champion (on the "Zouperbike Behème" each time) no longer came down from the first step of the podium! On the circuits of Zolder, Shleiz then Assen, Markus piled up victories, disgusted his opponents … and could thus win his third title at the Lausitzring with two events to go to the end of the season !
"The IDM weekend was just fantastic," recounts the BMW driver. "To be in pole position, to win both races and to be crowned before the end of the season on the Lausitzring in front of this crowd, what more could you ask for?" Another chance in WorldSBK, perhaps? He deserves one !
At the same time, "the WorldSBK weekend got off to a good start on Friday. My seventh place in the cumulative test standings meant that I qualified directly for Superpole 2. It was great," admits Stefan Bradl’s compatriot, who himself , had a catastrophic first day and was unable to participate in "his" on Saturday …
"The first race went pretty well until the 13th or 14th lap," continues Reiterberger. "I was eighth and my lap times were consistent. Unfortunately, I made two small mistakes when changing gear. The race which had started so well ended badly" … in thirteenth place exactly, 20 seconds behind Torres and 50 behind the relentless Davies.
On the other hand, "was magnificent", welcomes Markus. "I was slowed down a bit on the first lap but then closed the gap between me and the group fighting for fourth place." He will finish ninth, 20 seconds behind Davies … and only 4 behind the "Spanish Elvis" on his BMW n ° 81 !
"I have to say a big thank you to the members of the team. They did a great job on the bike. The overall way that has gone all weekend shows that we can be in the game in the world championship too. ", skilfully slips the triple German champion.
Set off in 2016 in the footsteps of – the last German rider to have won in World Superbike – Markus Reiterberger had to change his trajectory along the way … But he is firmly determined to return to the world elite. !
Wouldn’t BMW have an interest in seriously supporting this driver – from Bayern in Bavaria, what’s more! – in order to give it the means to shine in a category suffocated by Kawasaki, Ducati and their British riders? Case to follow, on Site…
