Metiss n ° 45
Ranked 22ndme on the starting grid and superb 8th scratch after two hours of racing, the Metiss stands out particularly from the 52 other machines entered: its original front axle, designed by Jean-Bertrand Bruneau alias "The Dentist" (it is his profession in the civilian!), "allows to separate the steering and suspension functions", explains to Site Jerôme Brun, eminent specialist in the field.
This motorcycle n ° 45 therefore remains very maneuverable in many phases and the transfer of mass under braking is done more slowly than with a conventional fork: "instead of diving suddenly 80%, this motorcycle only descends between 60 and 70% when the brakes are applied, which leaves more room for damping afterwards ", explains Jerôme..
Astonishing visually, the Metiss is not so when driving: its behavior is relatively similar to that of a classic motorcycle but gives the rider more confidence and allows him to get excellent lap times: "on our three riders, two had never ridden on the Metiss: the first set our best qualifying time and the second broke his personal best! "
Another advantage of this type of front axle called JBB: in the event of loss of the front end, the motorcycle does not tend to steer suddenly: "without a hinge, the wheel is naturally straight and this also reassures our pilots", continues the ‘team.
Exits from the track are also more manageable: "in the gravel trap, the motorcycle tracks straight ahead! Well, the flip side is that it can continue like this for a long time, even when the rider is not on it. ! ", also remarks our inexhaustible – and fascinating – interlocutor.
Eighth scratch at the Bol d’Or 2006, the friendly team is aiming for the Top 10 again this year! "We had problems at the beginning of the week because of the 210 mm tires that Dunlop had offered us, but since we put on the 200 again everything is back to normal!", Indicates a mechanic who did not what to do with the Open ranking …
Ducati 848 n ° 78
On the other hand, within the Ducati Endurance Racing Team, the n ° 1 priority is precisely this Open classification: "we first want to win the Open class", Jean-Pierre Benveniste, team manager, declares straight away to Site..
While we waited for the 1198 S, it is finally a "small" 848 – also equipped with Dunlop tires – which will try to overcome this mission. But it is promised, the Superbike – arriving too late from Italy this year – will be present at the 24H Moto du Mans from next year. !
The task is not easy for the youngest of the competition, 36th scratch after two hours of racing: "with its 140 hp, our bike gives 40 horsepower to top teams", estimates the team manager who prayed ardently for a 73rd rainy edition … without obviously having been heard! Less revolutionary than the Metiss, the Ducati 848 n ° 78 is equipped with remarkable suspensions – and noticed -: "the fork is original, but it is Matris who manufactures the upper elements and the rear shock absorber", explains Jean. -Pierre Benveniste.
Arrived 35th last year, the Ducati 848 n ° 78 – which sports the mythical colors of the Gulf tanker – will try to do even better in 2009, "even if it is first of all to go to the end"…
