RST unveils its V4.1 racing suit with electronic In & Motion airbag

The English manufacturer RST (Bihr group) joins as expected the small circle of equipment manufacturers who offer a track suit with integrated electronically triggered airbag with its new V4.1. Presentation.

Three manufacturers currently dominate the electronic airbag market, without cables or sensors on the motorcycle: Alpinestars, Dainese and, a small Savoyard company which has cleverly joined forces with major brands to accelerate its development. Result: In & Motion devices are now integrated into certain Ixon, Held, Furygan and, more recently, !

As indicated during, in Derbyshire, the English equipment manufacturer offers two lines of clothing compatible with the French autonomous airbag: the Adventure-X off-road jacket – being tested on MNC: stay connected! – and the new V4.1 track suit, "60%" made of kangaroo leather.

"Unlike the previous model, the leather of the V4.1 no longer comes entirely from kangaroos: we have changed Australian supplier and reduced the number of parts that make it up", explained the English brand, bought by the group. . 

This new product for 2020 now incorporates bovine leather from 1.1 to 1.13 mm at the buttocks and forearms, while the rest benefits from the qualities of flexibility of kangaroo leather from 0.7 to 0.8 mm. The additional thickness and the difference in materials is justified by the exposure to abrasion of the buttocks and arms in the event of a fall. 

Another advantage of this modification: the lowered manufacturing cost, which allows the new V4.1 to be displayed from 899 euros, i.e. 300 euros less than in 2019! The addition amounts to 1199 euros with the autonomous In & Motion airbag, which takes place in the CE approved back protector included in the equipment..

A full-blown wetsuit !

For better comfort, the device fits under the mesh lining of the suit: the breathability of the V4.1 is thus preserved, as is the pilot’s mobility. RST also took into account the inevitable stretching of certain areas when deploying the airbag to avoid being uncomfortably compressed in the event of a fall..

 

The airbag is triggered by accelerometer type sensors associated with a sophisticated algorithm capable of analyzing "1000 calculations per second"! If impact or imbalance is detected, the airbag deploys in just 55ms over the chest, abdomen, spine, cervical and collarbones.

Its use is subject to a subscription of 12 euros per month – or 120 euros per year – to which is added another 8 euros per month additional to activate the "Track" mode specific to this device! Or a total of 20 euros per month: the price of security ?

Trackers put off by this significant cost will note with interest the possible deactivation of the service according to their needs via their user account on the dedicated application. In this way, the airbag can be activated only during the driving months and then put on "standby" the other periods of the year..
