The 2014 CRF 450 Rally is a bullet !
Even if Marc Coma seems well on course to offer another victory to KTM, several manufacturers are now able to stop the hegemony of the Austrian brand on the Dakar..
Starting first with Honda with its: in the space of just two years, the bike of the world’s leading manufacturer has sharpened badly, to equal the KTM benchmark, or even surpass it in some areas. Yesterday, in the dunes of Chile, the CRF justly put forward its strengths, namely a pure power as high as it can be exploited and an excellent balance.
Result: the HRC places two of its drivers (the Spaniard Joan Barreda Bort and the Portuguese Helder Rodrigues) at the top of the tenth stage, the Valencian signing his fourth victory since the start in Rosario! This success enabled him to consolidate his second place overall and to gain ten minutes from the leader, Marc Coma. Casually, Barreda is at this stage the driver with the most stage victories of this edition…
The 2014 vintage of the Yamaha also made strong progress, as evidenced by the consistency and speed of its leader, Cyril Despres, for several days. The Frenchman finished third in this long tenth stage (688 km!), Which allowed him to return to sixth place overall, a stone’s throw from Helder Rodrigues (5th) and Olivier Pain (4th).
Too bad that the defending champion lost so much time at the start of the rally: he is still 2h28 behind the leader.
"We drove well, it’s good for me and for the general classification," said Despres. "It takes me back a bit, I don’t know how far, but I’m trying"…
Fourth at the finish yesterday in Antofagasta (Chile), Pain also shows how competitive the YZ450F Rally has become. The Frenchman concedes only 11 minutes to Barreda at the finish and goes up to the general in third place held by Jordi Viladoms, the water carrier of Coma.
Marc Coma, precisely: author of a "clean" special and without any errors, the KTM official consolidates day after day the foundations of his fourth success on the King of Rallys (winner in 2006, 2009 and 2011). Decided not to take any risks, the Catalan took the wheel of his former teammate, Cyril Despres, during almost the entire special. He finished fifth of the day and maintains his lead overall just above 40 minutes.
"There are still very difficult days when anything can happen: for sure all is going well for the moment, but everything is possible", he tempers cautiously when analyzing his position: "n ‘ any mistake can waste a lot of your time ".
Same story for his current runner-up, Joan Barreda Bort, when he arrived at the bivouac (photo opposite): "We are getting closer, nothing is lost. Marc has many advantages but everything is possible".
And this is the beauty of rally-raid: as long as the finish is not crossed, everything is indeed possible. !
