Decrease in the motorcycle market in May 2014
Positive since the beginning of 2014, the motorcycle market in France suffered a slight backlash in May: registrations of 125 fell by -7.7% and those of the larger engines by -2.6%. Explanations in the Site report.
Decline in May 2014
Twelve months ago, the motorbike and scooter market (over 50 cc) in France had fallen by -7.3% (read our). However, the marker placed at 15,754 units was not even reached this year….
After a positive start to 2014, sales have stopped growing: -4.2% compared to May 2013 which was nothing exceptional, except for the bad weather! This year, "the rainfall for the month of May was normal", affirms Meteo France, and"the sunshine was close to seasonal values".
Certainly, meteorologists report in their monthly report for the month of May 2014 "much cooler than the previous months, marked by temperatures slightly below normal"… But it is difficult to see how the single thermometer could have kept customers away from concessions.
Would the French have gorged themselves too much on new motorcycles when the beautiful days appeared (from March this year) and would they already be satisfied? This is not only the opinion of the Site, but also that of certain senior brand managers in France (read. The presence of bridges in May may have encouraged some bikers to anticipate the purchase of their motorcycle to take advantage of it during the month of May. long weekends…
Among large cubes, however, the drop in speed is limited to -2.6%, mainly thanks to Yamaha: the number one "over 125" in France is + 46.3%! Harley-Davidson is the only other brand in the Top 10 to see its score improve (+ 5.7%).
The other major manufacturers are grimly: registrations of Honda, Triumph and Aprilia have respectively plunged -19.6%, -32.4% and -46.7%, those of Suzuki, Ducati and KTM have fallen by -12 , 2%, -9.9% and -10%, and finally those of Kawasaki and BMW fell by -5.4% and -3.6%.
As for the 125 cc, the slowdown is more marked: -7.7% compared to May 2013. In this sector, Yamaha has to be content with second place and a timid + 2.5%, behind Honda (- 4.2%). Their pursuers know various fortunes.
We will remember the good performances of two French brands: MBK has sold half more scooters than a year ago (+ 47.5%) and Mash has almost doubled its – already remarkable – score of last year (106 motorcycles in May 2013, 198 in May 2014).
