Market reports - The motorcycle market seizes up in January - The motorcycle market seizes up

The year 2010 did not start off strongly for motorcycles in France, with 8,716 registrations in January. There are sales drops of -31.4% for the 125 cc and -16.1% for the large cubes compared to a first month 2009 already not glorious. Hard.

The motorcycle market seizes up

January 2010 was difficult for motorcycles in France! First of all, from a meteorological point of view, with an average temperature over the whole of the territory placed below 0 ° C and numerous snowfalls, especially in the west and south-east. Then commercially, since dealers have only registered 8,176 motorcycles…

Last year, in this same first month, the market recorded 11,218 registrations: the overall drop in sales of motorcycles in France therefore amounts to -22.3%. A result that cannot however be attributed to the weather alone: as a reminder, January 2009 had already been freezing (read) !

So there remains, in an attempt to put this sad result into perspective, the "working days" factor: in January 2010, there were 20 against 21 last year. Likewise, last month there were 21 "concession opening days" against 22 in January 2009..

However, by searching the calendars more carefully, we see that January 1 fell this year on a Friday: did customers have trouble getting up on Saturday 2 to go to sign in the dealership, thus putting off – much more late? – their purchase? Possible … or not.

We note that the slip is more clear in the 125 cc since 3,124 motorcycles and 125 scooters were registered last January, against 4,552 in January 2009 (and 6,708 in January 2008!). The fall therefore reached -31.4% … We had not seen this since July 2009.

Japanese and French manufacturers are all affected: their Taiwanese and Korean "colleagues" have their market share crunched while at the same time, the Italian Piaggio limits the breakage in 125 and at the same time continues to distribute its MP3 LT ( 250 and 400) at an impressive rate. Like what good innovation, even – and especially – in times of crisis !

In the "+ 125 cc", the situation is a bit less desperate: with 5,592 registrations, the large engines limit the breakage to -16.1%. And here again the Japanese brands look gray, like the American and Austrian, while only BMW and Gas Gas have good scores….
