New in 2014: the Yamaha SR400 makes the show at EICMA !
As announced last July, Yamaha took advantage of the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan to exhibit a preparation made by Wrenchmonkees on an SR400 basis. This Yard Built 400 S.R GibbonSlap celebrates 35 years of Iwata’s small single-cylinder, which is getting a second lease of life in Europe where it will be imported again in 2014.
Like, Yamaha took advantage of the EICMA Motorcycle Show in Milan to exhibit a preparation made by Wrenchmonkees on a SR400 basis. This Yard Built 400 S.R GibbonSlap celebrates 35 years of Iwata’s small single-cylinder, which is getting a second lease of life in Europe where it will be imported again in 2014.
SR400: the old one up to date…
Derived from the 1978 SR500, the SR400 is an authentic retro motorcycle with classic lines – not to say "utility" – whose career continued in Japan only. Aware that this type of motorcycle responds both to the new specificities of and to the growing interest of European bikers for vintage, Yamaha decided to relaunch it in Europe in 2014.
Heralded as the "spearhead" of the Sport Heritage range – a new family created by Yamaha around the XV950, XJR1300 and Vmax – the SR400 is powered by an antique 399 cc 4-stroke air-cooled single cylinder, both of which valves are driven by a single overhead camshaft.
Weakly compressed (8.5: 1) and showing modest performance (23.2 hp and 27.4 Nm of torque), this block is "technically almost identical to the original", recognizes Yamaha.
Its only concessions to progress are at the level of the admission (air filter and larger intake valve), the power supply (the injection replaces the carburetor), the ignition and the exhaust which adopts an inevitable catalyst. For the rest, it’s all the same: the single cylinder retains even its kick starter, with decompressor! Those nostalgic for the "belle epoque" will appreciate. The "youngsters" that Yamaha hopes to seduce by offering them an authentic old one that is easily customizable, perhaps a little less…
The cycle part is of the same barrel with a semi-split cradle frame in steel tubes connected to a non-adjustable telescopic fork at the front and two combined shock absorbers at the rear. Small technical subtlety: the engine lubricant is contained in the main tube of the chassis, which eliminates the need for an oil pan.
Braking is provided by a 298 mm disc clamped by a two-piston caliper at the front and by a drum at the rear. On paper, this should be enough to stop this bike announced at 174 kg all full made and equipped with narrow tires in 18 inches (90 mm at the front, 110 at the rear). But you should probably not expect the power and consistency of a …
In terms of practicality, the long two-seater saddle – soft to the touch – is among the positive points, as are the standard center stand and the chrome grab handle. With a reduced capacity (12 liters), the water drop tank could offer satisfactory autonomy if consumption is "in tune" with mechanical performance..
The 2014 SR400 will be offered in mat gray and black, at a date and at a price that MNC has not yet been able to obtain from Yamaha Motor France..
Yard Built 400 S.R GibbonSlap and SR400 B.S.R
To celebrate the return to Europe of this SR400, Yamaha exhibited in Milan two very beautiful preparations: the Yard Built 400 S.R GibbonSlap, and the magnificent SR400 B.S.R on which the Iwata crest had kept the secret..
Designed by Wrenchmonkees in collaboration with Kedo (a German parts specialist), the GibbonSlap turns the wise SR400 into a nasty scrambler.
The Danish preparer notably grafted to the original model large nipple tires, a very beautiful titanium megaphone-style exhaust, a single-seater saddle surrounded by saddlebags, before repainting everything in black..
In accordance with the Yard Built approach implemented by Yamaha (read in particular), this preparation is designed to make future SR400 owners want to personalize their bike. Parts and accessories derived from this project will therefore be offered for this purpose from spring 2014..
Even more impressive by its incredible degree of finish and its artisanal side, the SR400 B.S.R is a project without commercial aim carried out by a Japanese preparer. Established in central Tokyo for 16 years, this Japanese maker prefers to remain anonymous, despite all the interest aroused by his creation….
Virtually unrecognizable, the original SR400 saw its fuel tank give way to a hand-crafted model, while the raised handlebars and the longer-than-original Ceriani fork give the front end a vague chopper feel..
The cone-shaped exhaust, cross-spoke rims – on which are mounted wide tires – and the truncated rear fender complete this preparation which drew people to the Yamaha stand. !
