Speed cameras - Speed at 80 km-h: 40 million motorists request the creation of an independent monitoring committee -

The association 40 million motorists, at the forefront in the fight against the drop in speed to 80 km / h decided by the Prime Minister, calls for the creation of an "independent monitoring committee" to assess the real impact of 80 km / h on road accidents in two years. Explanations.

Edouard Philippe having assured during the that the drop in speed to 80 km / h would be the subject of an evaluation in 2020, the association 40 million motorists (40MA) takes the Prime Minister at his word and calls for the creation of ‘an "independent monitoring committee" which would make it possible to validate – or not – this measure, criticized by the majority of French people but applicable from July 1, 2018…

"A misunderstood measure is not accepted and therefore not respected", yet "82% of French people believe that the first objective of this measure is not the improvement of road safety but the increase in fines collected by the State ", recalls Daniel Quero, president of the association, above left.

Road users and independent experts

Stressing "the need for a rigorous and honest study", 40 million motorists estimate that the Prime Minister is "aware of the skepticism of the French with regard to this measure" since he "ordered the realization of a study that he wishes "precise and objective" to determine the impact on the accident ". A meeting must therefore take place on July 1, 2020 – two years after the entry into force of the new speed limit – to report on the data collected over this period and their analysis..

"This nationwide study is an excellent thing, provided it is actually carried out with precision, rigor, objectivity and honesty, unlike what has been done about past experimentation," warns Mr. Quero, who is keen to ensure this through this "independent monitoring committee".

"We expect the Prime Minister to admit his mistake"

This committee, which could be made up of "associations of road users and independent experts", would have the task of "analyzing the accident data recorded on the road network every six months and issuing the conclusions that are required at the end of the two-year test period ", continues the association. "It will therefore also be necessary to define the criteria according to which these data will be analyzed, in order to determine what part of the expected reduction in road accidents and fatalities can be attributed to the reduction in the maximum authorized speed. this committee, the association calls for the creation of a parliamentary commission ".

"More precisely, for this committee it will be a question of identifying the precise causes of road accidents", specifies Mr. Quero: "for all bodily and fatal accidents for which speed has been recognized as the main factor, it will be necessary be able to determine whether the speed of the vehicle (s) involved was between 80 and 90 km / h. Since the decision to drop to 80 km / h has been made, despite the opposition of the majority of motorists, we hope of course it will bear fruit. But otherwise, we expect the Prime Minister to recognize his mistake and reconsider these regulations ".
