Since its creation in 1988, the World Superbike had never crowned an Italian rider … But for 24 hours, the history of the discipline has changed: yesterday Max Biaggi became the first transalpine to win the World Superbike championship.

Thirteen years after his last 250cc Grand Prix coronation, the Roman Emperor therefore won his fifth star. And the famous n ° 3 did not do it anyhow !

First of all, despite his absence on the podium after the two races, fans will remember that Max was crowned SBK World Champion at home in Italy. On the Imola circuit more precisely, that of two other great Italians: Enzo and Dino Ferrari…

The occasion also for Max to tackle "Il Commendatore". Indeed, according to Mr. Ferrari, a driver who becomes a dad loses a second per lap … "Enzo Ferrari was wrong !", therefore inscribed on his T-shirt the new Italian champion, who this weekend celebrated the first birthday of his daughter Ines !

A certain Bologna brand this time also takes it for its rank since, according to this same T-shirt worn during the presentation of its trophy, Biaggi will never thank Ducati enough for not having signed it in 2009! And pan … "Aprilia and Piaggio are my second family", insists the pirate Max !

In all, these are ten reasons that Max Biaggi lists to explain the obtaining of his fifth world title. Here they are in order:

However, the success of Max Biaggi should not overshadow the superb performances of his opponents! Carlos Checa in the first place, must be congratulated as it should for his double !

The Spanish driver held Imola his revenge on the American test of Miller, when two successive breakdowns of his 1098 deprived him of a probable double … A double which had landed in the pocket of Max Biaggi elsewhere !

Best Ducati rider over the two races but also over the entire season, it was no real surprise that we learned at the end of this penultimate weekend of World Superbike racing that the n ° 7 was renewed in his Ducati Althea team next year in the SBK World Cup.

The official Ducatis out of the race next year (read), "El Torro" will undoubtedly benefit from more support from the Bologna factory … The boost that will allow him to win his very first star in the world championship ?!

In the first round, Checa was joined on the podium by two other Ducati riders: Haga and de Lanzi. And in the second round, the Japanese did it again by climbing on the 2nd step…

Ducati therefore sees its situation in the championship improve significantly: the Bologna Reds (392 points) overtake Suzuki (379), and remain less than 50 points from Aprilia, 41 exactly. L-cylinder specialists thus retain a slim chance of winning a 17th constructor title..

For Suzuki, on the other hand, it’s done … Betrayed by his GSX-R, Leon Haslam also had to give up his hopes of a miracle – but not undeserved, far from it – in 2010. Courageous even reckless on some braking, English had nothing to lose on the track – though, say that to Shoya Tomisawa or Craig Jones…

It was from the edge of the track that Leon was therefore forced to see his opponent beat him definitively. The top driver of Les Jaunes is thus poorly rewarded for all his efforts. But this observation is not limited to this only second round of Imola or to the 2010 championship. !

His team manager, Francis Batta Himself, is sorry to have to release Leon at the end of this superb season. Without any response from the parent company Suzuki regarding his commitment to the World SBK next year, the boss of the Alstare team had to break the two-year contract which bound him to his "Pocket Rocket"….

"We wish Leon the best for the 2011 season", resigned himself Francis Batta,"we are disappointed to lose such a talented driver, on whom we had based all our hopes. Apparently our main partner did not share our opinion".

What reinforced concrete excuse will Hamamatsu officials come out with … The same as Ducati perhaps: concentration of financial and technical resources on production motorcycles and on MotoGP? The reason will only be truly admissible if Suz ‘brings us real novelties in the coming years and reinvests the forefront in Grand Prix. !

At Kawasaki, however, the future is brighter: while its 2010 ZX-10R just announced, its 2007 sister recorded its best results. Of course it took the help of the rain for the Ninja and Tom Sykes to take pole position….

But in dry racing, it is with his only panache that "Grinner" – Tom is known for his broad smile! – secured the 6th in the first round then the 4th place in the second.

Leader for many laps, the English rider reminded the public that he has one of the most demonstrative styles of the field: glides, rear wheels, mobility on the bike … Sykes never gives up and his efforts are starting to fail. bear fruit. Can’t wait for next season that we see him more often !

Unlike James Toseland (two falls …), Cal Crutchlow was able to represent Yamaha with dignity this weekend. Like Noriyuki Haga – starting 14th on the grid! -, the n ° 35 managed to transform a distant 12th place in qualifying into a nice 3rd place in the second round.

At the end of the race, Crutchlow got back on his opponents so quickly that we thought Ben Spies had returned to the official R1! Let’s hope for Herve Poncharal, that Cal will be as worthy a successor of "Speez" within the Tech3 MotoGP team next year as at Yamaha Sterilgarda this season..

Excellent during the four previous events, Jonathan Rea was unfortunately not able to spice up the 2010 edition of the WSBK in Imola. Falling heavily during qualifying, the young Irishman ignored his broken collarbone and wrist to take the handlebars on Sunday morning in the warm-up.

After only two laps, Johnny found himself on the ground, but morale was still high enough to ride his second Fireblade … Very quickly the n ° 65 realized that, really, he could not decently defend his chances the same afternoon !

Last I heard, Honda rider Ten Kate was in England to consult. Jonathan naturally hopes to be operational for next week at Magny-Cours. Present on the Imola track but absent from the debates at the forefront, our Sylvain Guintoli will indeed be in the game next Sunday. Forza Sylvain !
