Motorcycle markets: sales figures worldwide in comparison
The really big motorcycle markets
Germany just ran under
When it comes to motorcycles, Germany likes to think of itself as the center and hub of the two-wheeled world and the outcry is great when manufacturers make unpopular decisions here and there in model policy. In an international comparison of sales figures, Germany is rather a little light.
Jens Kratschmar
January 15, 2021
No question. In terms of brand loyalty and purchasing power, the German motorcycle market is extremely interesting. With a total of 230,000 newly registered two-wheelers across all classes, Germany is an attractive market, especially for manufacturers who traditionally offer high-displacement, high-tech machines.
Still strong in Europe
In a European comparison of the pure registration numbers, the 230,000 new registrations in Germany are a word and stand between France (285,000 units) and Italy (220,000 units) “weather” with it on the pedestal. The growth in Germany of a good 18 percent only distorts the comparison with Italy and the minus of six percent there. In general, markets that could grow significantly in 2020 are rare. In Europe, Switzerland can also be added here. On the other hand, the losses in Europe are still small, at nine percent in Spain or eight in France. For comparison: In 2020 the actual growth market India will lose almost a quarter of the annual volume with 23.3 percent, which pushes the result to a still absurd-sounding 14.8 million units.
Bajaj
The Bajaj Design therefore cover all tastes and is represented in many different cubic capacity classes. They are then involved in large bikes through KTM and Triumph as a partner or partner.
America will be dark in 2020
2020 left deep ruts on the American continent and its two-wheeler markets. Growth could not be measured here throughout. Absolute figures from the USA are not yet available, but forecasts assume just under 780,000 units or a minus of a good nine percent. On the other hand, there is up to 26 percent growth in ATVs. The Latin American countries were particularly badly hit, with Argentina (260,000), Mexico (800,000) and Colombia (520,000) each reporting a good 20 percent loss. But Brazil (900,000) has also lost around 15 percent of its volume. (2020 approval figures in brackets).

Vespa is actually one of the fastest growing brands in Vietnam.
Across the Pacific to completely different worlds
First Taiwan: With a good 24 million inhabitants on the area of ββone tenth of the Federal Republic of Germany, 2020 was a two-wheeled year there. Almost 900,000 two-wheelers or three percent more were newly registered here. Kymco holds the largest market share with a good 30 percent. It goes without saying that this is mainly about scooters and small volumes, but this number already shows what manufacturers really have to deal with: availability. The calculation is simple: in Taiwan, almost 2,500 two-wheelers are sold every calendar day. In Germany only 640 and even that can cause displeasure in the event of delivery bottlenecks. And Taiwan is a small market in Asia: the Chinese market takes less than five days to reach the total annual sales figures for Germany. Mental calculators now know immediately that a good 16 million two-wheelers (+ 1%) were newly registered in China in 2020, a good 44,000 a day. Nobody can top that. India follows shortly behind with 14.8 million new registrations forecast in 2020, despite the hefty 23.3 percent loss in 2020.
Hero
The Indian manufacturer Hero is one of the largest in Asia with over five million motorcycles per year. However, there is currently no international strategy like that of Bajaj.
Strong markets, strong producers
If you take a closer look at the Asian market, two countries stand out in particular. Thailand and Indonesia. With a good 4.5 million new registrations, the latter can justifiably be called a giant, but had to accept a decline of 34 percent in sales in 2020. Interesting about it. At the same time, a good six million units were produced in the country. So very few go into export. By the way, the Indonesian government wants to produce 10 million two-wheelers a year by 2025 and only export one million of them. It looks similar in Thailand. The production figures of a good two million two-wheelers roughly coincide with the registration figures for 2020. The top 5 countries with the highest motorcycle production figures are (rounded):
- China: 23 million
- India: 20 million
- Indonesia: 8 million
- Vietnam: 3 million
- Thailand: 2 million

Will the Chinese become serious competitors for the established motorcycle manufacturers??

Yes, they learn quickly.
No, they never reach their level.
Conclusion
It’s no surprise, internationally speaking, the German motorcycle market is just one of many. In Europe, the recently growing German motorcycle opinion is worth a lot and also the constant further developments of the manufacturers of models mainly for the non-Asian market shows that the opinion of the “small” Markets matters. Always drive on nicely.
