Motus MST-01 2012

Menus

When you mix Grand Touring motorcycle and the Americans, you quickly imagine road liners such as a Harley Electra Glide, a Victory Vision Tour or the Japanese response that is the Goldwing. Inordinate, heavy, imposing, majestic machines, like Uncle Sam likes.

This is not quite how the young builder Motus thinks. Don’t look for Thierry Beccaro…. A very recent box born in Alabama, which knew in a very short time to develop a Sport-GT with its own engine. And this is not blank intended to impress the gallery: the motorbike is running and could be marketed by the end of 2011. Surprising, but what stronghold is it defending in a category where experience plays a major role in the skills of ‘a machine ?

A motorbike is first and foremost a crush. And on this point, Motus seems to have lost the directory of design companies. Without being mean, the MST-01 is unmatched blandness. A pasta dish without butter, cheese and cooking would elicit more enthusiasm. By its shapes, proportions, silhouette, this bike seems to play on several categories: Honda CBF 1000 airs, a typical Pan-European engine, a VFR 1200 as a direct competitor, and a vague similarity to the late Buell S3T . If looking at this Sport-GT does not raise the heart, its engine manages to cause much more fizz.

A big, a cavernous, a grumpy V4. Mechanics at odds with the American motorcycling religion, which usually do not swear by the air-cooled twin. And yet he smells America full of America when the pistons flicker. Under the control of the accelerator, this 1654cc block, dubbed KMW4, groans and vociferates like a good old Muscle-car V8. It seems that this engine would draw its inspiration from the Chevrolet Corvette.
Not very nice to look at, the engine of the MST-01 is distinguished not only by its voice but also by its technique. Tilted distribution, direct injection, and power to thrill many Japanese and European GTs: 161 horsepower reached below 8,000 rpm. When it comes to torque, almost 17 mkg are available at 4,500 rpm. These values compete directly with those of the 6 cylinder BMW K 1600 GT / GTL. Of course, between the German and the American, the behavior and the melody do not play at all in the same register.

The technical solutions of the chassis are more traditional while being more European. A tubular trellis frame supports the engine as well as an inverted telehydraulic fork equipped with radial brake calipers. The final transmission is effected by chain, returning the power mixed by a 6-speed gearbox: the last 2 are of the “overdrive” type, to calm the engine speed and consumption. One of the achievements of the Motus brand is to have managed to offer a very reasonable weight of 227 kgs; facing a GTR 1400 or an FJR 1300, the MST is a featherweight.
The carbon fairing explains part of this minimum mass. The protection offered by the latter and the loading volume of the suitcases should be in a good average, close to the performance of a Triumph Sprint GT.
This MST will also be available in a Premium version, with Ohlins suspensions and Brembo brakes. The price remains an unknown for the moment, but we will not fail to follow the evolutions of this model, which will have taken a record time to be born, and which will certainly very quickly surprise us..
