The Brutale hit our roads in 2003, and immediately established itself as a style benchmark. Owning (in every sense of the word) this machine represented a difference, a pinnacle of design among roadsters.. And even today, the fascination remains. Without shedding its “high-end” image, MV-Agusta now wants its gems to be more accessible. Hence the idea of this 920 Brutale. Or how to offer the sparkle of a beautiful jewel by removing a few carats from the diamonds ….
We are not going to go back to the silhouette. It goes through time as if it were sliding over her. The slight alterations made for the genesis of the 1090/990 were nothing but chocolate shavings added to an already irresistible cake. The 920 is identical to its sisters; except that the matte black color is not the most shimmering, bordering on taciturn. The other color available, white, should be more cheerful but will not have the sparkle of the MV colors of higher productions.
It is reminiscent of Ducati ‘’ Dark ’’ models. But rest assured: if Varese has found a way to save some money to bring the price down, it is not to the detriment of the Brutale’s identity. Everything is there: the single-sided arm, the star rims, the bevelled flute exhausts, the Brembo radial brake calipers, the large 50 mm inverted fork, the line sculpted by Tamburini, and the headlight…. this lighthouse, symbol and legend all by itself. This 920 isn’t a cheap Brutale – it’s an entry-level Brutale, shade.
And how much will it cost? Less than 12,000 euros, said MV. WHAT ?!? There’s a plastic motor for that price, right? Not at all. But to get the price, we scooped up a few elements without it showing too much. Standard indicators that are no longer integrated into the mirrors, a shock absorber equipped only with preload and rebound adjustments, non-monoblock brakes, and economies of scale thanks to the massive resumption of elements from the 990 / 1090. Same frame (both better), same trim, same dashboard, same single-sided, and a new engine which is very much inspired by the 1090.
How to get a 921 cc from the big 4 cylinder 1078 cc? Simple, we reduce the bore. It goes from 79 to 73 mm. The stroke remains the same at 55 mm. Associated with a Marelli 5SM injection, the boiler brings out the trifle of 129 horsepower at 10,500 rpm. This is roughly what a CB 1000 R spits out. Except in behavior, it would be compared to a badly awake beast to a respectful samurai. Although the 920 Brutale is equipped with 8-position traction control and 2 engine mappings, the 4-cylinder should not derail its reputation for character. Any other mood would be inconceivable – Would you be satisfied with softness and flirtatiousness with such plastic? ?
While the engine will be limited in terms of patience, certain aspects of this 920 clearly indicate Varese’s desire to appease more curious people and attract them to his roadster. In addition to its “floor” price, this troublemaker has a new, lower saddle and softer, more comfortable suspensions. For athletes, no need to worry: MV says it only takes a few clicks on the settings to transform it into a track weapon.
An accessible MV-Agusta? We will have seen it all. This Brutale 920 is a very tempting proposition against other streetfighters, almost equivalent in power and price. If I had told you last year that for the same amount, you had the choice between a Z 1000 ABS, a 1050 Speed Triple, an 1100 Monster ABS or a Brutale, you would have taken me for a comedian or the brainless from the neighborhood. Now this is no longer the case.
