New motorcycle registrations 2020: brand bestsellers
New motorcycle registrations 2020
The bestsellers of the brands
Which brands actually do the best business with which model? We studied the new registrations in 2020 and picked out the best-selling bikes from the ten top manufacturers.
Uli Baumann
01/25/2021
Introductory question: Name us the bestseller from Honda in Germany in 2020? Oops, caught on the wrong foot. Do you want to ask the audience or call the telephone joker? No need, we have the answer. The bestseller at Honda in 2020 was the – drum roll – CMX 500 Rebel with a share of 13.5 percent and 2,037 units sold.
Only in second place is the Africa Twin with 12.4 percent and 1,867 new registrations, just ahead of the CB 650 R with 1,786 registrations and 11.9 percent. This is followed by the NC 750 X (1,409 / 9.4%) and the CB 500 F (1,201 / 8.0%).

Suzuki cancels bestseller
Suzuki
Second round – this time Suzuki. No, the 650 V2 models are not right at the front. Right at the top is the GSX-S 750 with 2,178 new registrations and 30.4 percent. Although the naked bike accounts for almost a third of Suzuki sales in this country, it will only be sold without a Euro 5 upgrade. Only in the following ranks are the SV 650 (1,711 / 23.9%) and the V-Strom 650 (1,060 / 14.8%). Rank four and five fill GSX-S 1000 (740 / 10.3%) and V-Strom 1050 (605 / (8.5%).
With Triumph everything is clear – there is a three-cylinder in front. Yes, but which one? It is the greatest. The Rocket III is a bestseller from 2020 with 791 new registrations and a brand share of 13 percent. It is followed by the Tiger 900 (681 / 11.2%), Street Triple (654 / 10.8%), Speed Twin (535 / 8.8%) and Scrambler 1200 (476 / 7.8%).
Supermoto boom in Pierer Land
KTM
The bestsellers at KTM and Husqvarna show how popular supermotos are in this country. Among the oranges, the 690 SMC (2,492 / 15.2%) is just ahead of the 790 Duke (2,418 / 14.7%). In the husky stable, the 701 Supermoto is the strongest horse with 1,235 new registrations and a brand share of 31.7 percent. KTM’s bestsellers are rounded off by the 390 Duke (2,277 / 13.8%), the 790 Adventure (1,428 / 8.7%) and the 1290 Super Duke R (1,353 / 8.2%).
The following places fill the Sweden branch: Svartpilen 401 (469 / 12.0%), Vitpilen 701/420 / 10.8%), 701 Enduro (338 / 8.7%) and TE 300 (331 / 8.5%) ).
Twin cylinders are the backbone of Yamaha
fact, Markus Jahn, Yamaha
Yamaha can rely on a 700cc two-cylinder. The MT-07 is ahead with 3,226 new registrations and 24.9 percent. The Tenere 700 took second place with 2,394 new registrations and 18.5 percent. If you add the XSR 700 in fifth place (695 / 5.4%), the little twins account for almost 50 percent of total sales. The large three-cylinder MT-09 (1,393 / 10.8%) and Tracer 900 (1,307 / 10.1%) are in third and fourth place and are good for a further 21 percent.
At Ducati, customer interest focused on the new Streetfighter V4 in 2020. 1,007 new registrations and 18.4 percent secure first place. This is followed by Hypermotard 950 and Panigale V4 (each 598 / 10.9%), as well as Scrambler (592 / 10.8%) and Multistrada 1260 (506 / 9.3%).
Z for Kawasaki
Kawasaki
Kawasaki presents itself entirely in the name of the Zett models. The Z 900 got a full 26 percent and 3,853 new registrations. The small Z 650 got 3,086 new registrations and 20.8 percent. As the Ninja 650, the twin delivers a further 1,270 approvals and 8.6 percent. With 1,111 registrations and 7.5 percent, the Z 900 RS contributes further Zett-Power in fifth place. In between there is a lonely cruiser with the Vulcan (1,119 / 7.5%).
Only cruisers are of course at Harley. Here, the ranks one to five are distributed nicely alternately between large and small V2 models. Above is the XL 1200 X (1,220 / 11.0%). Below the Low Rider S (664 / 6.0%). In between the Street Bob (1,079 / 9.8%), the Sport Glide (737 / 6.7%) and the XL 883 Iron (694 / 6.3%). The small models in particular would have positioned themselves even better if Harley had been able to deliver some. Since they are no longer in the program, the remaining stocks were quickly sold off.
BMW is GS and boxer
BMW
And what about the BMW market leader? With 9,228 new registrations, the R 1250 GS guarantees 34.5 percent of sales in this country. Everything that comes after that is only small cattle against the GS. The S 1000 XR has 1,704 new registrations and 6.4 percent. It is followed by the F 900 R (1,654 / 6.2%), the R 1250 RS (1,515 / 5.7%) and the R 1250 R (1,339 / 5.0%).
Conclusion
It is not necessarily the models that attract the most attention that ultimately sell best.
