New motorcycle registrations in Switzerland 2020
Record year with 20 percent growth

The motorcycle trade in Switzerland is happy. A whopping 20 percent more motorcycles were sold in 2020, after a slump of over 25 percent between March and May.

Jens Kratschmar

01/13/2021

At the start of the season in lockdown, the Swiss motorcycle market had to contend with a severe slump of over 25 percent. But by the end of June the minus could be compensated and since then everything was literally ripped out of the dealers’ hands on two wheels.

The number of new registrations in 2020 was 4,669 units or 20 percent higher than in the previous year, increasing to a record result of a total of 29,450 motorcycles sold. With a look at the top manufacturers and the corresponding models, the idea of motorcyclists in Switzerland pays particular attention to the price-performance ratio, because with the Yamaha MT-07, Kawasaki Z 650 and Z 900 there are three on the podium in this category just hard to beat. Germany’s favorite, the R 1250 GS, only comes in fourth – even if the Adventure is listed separately.

The top 15 most successful motorcycle manufacturers in Switzerland in 2020

The order of the most successful manufacturers in Switzerland reads very similarly. Yamaha, Kawasaki and BMW on the podium, followed by Honda, KTM and Triumph. As far as I’m used to. In 13th and 14th place the first surprises with Royal Enfield and 44 percent more sales in 2020 and Brixton with a strong 146 percent increase.

The sometimes large increases in high-performance motorcycles such as the Kawasaki Z900 with almost 89 percent or the Yamaha XSR 900 with 79 percent can probably also be explained by a change in driving license law in Switzerland: From 2021, even newcomers over 25 years of age will first have to use the A2 – Drive class with 48 hp for two years. Anyone who obtained or applied for a driver’s license in 2020 is allowed to drive motorcycles directly without any performance restrictions.

Scooters are also strong in Switzerland

The scooter market in Switzerland is showing slightly lower, but also clearly double-digit growth. Here, Switzerland had a strong year with 18,129 units or an increase of 11.20 percent compared to 2019. Very interesting: with an increase of over 150 percent, the area of electric scooters has grown enormously across all brands.

In the top ten scooter models in Switzerland, Vespa, Yamaha and Honda set the tone. Each manufacturer is represented here with three models, complemented by the most successful SYM model, the Jet 125. Exactly this displacement seems to be predominant in Switzerland, only two of the first ten are larger than 125 cubic meters.

The 10 strongest scooter brands in Switzerland in 2020

With the manufacturers themselves, Vespa clearly sets the tone in Switzerland, followed by Yamaha and Honda. The Spanish manufacturer Wottan posted the strongest increase with 338 percent, whereby the sum of 171 units is still small, but already within striking distance of the established manufacturers. So the demand for new brands seems to be there.

Conclusion

Price-performance drives the Swiss into the motorbike shops. The podiums are climbed by the bikes, which offer a lot of two-wheelers for the euro, sorry francs.
