New motorcycle registrations for 2017 as a whole, top 50

The motorcycle market in Germany shrank last year. But which brands and which models sold best in Germany in 2017? We have taken a close look at the new registration statistics for the full year 2017 for you, and also checked which brands have had the most commercial registrations.

Dina Dervisevic

January 17, 2018

From 2015 to 2016, new registrations in Germany grew strongly (+ 14.88 percent). A year later, the market for new motorcycles almost completely gave up the increase (- 14.31 percent). In absolute figures, this means: In 2015 101,714 motorcycles were newly registered in Germany, in 2016 there were 116,850 vehicles and in 2017 the KBA reported 100,128 newly registered motorcycles.

The most noticeable deviation from the previous year was towards the end of the year: In December 2016, 9,246 motorcycles were newly registered, in December 2017 there were just 1,911 units. Reason: The Euro 4 standard, which came into force on January 1, 2017 for new motorcycle models and prompted many dealers and manufacturers to get daily registrations. For comparison: In December 2015, 2,451 motorcycles were newly registered.

However, it is not only thanks to the new EU standard that 2016 was a year with high registrations: In April 2016, for example, 18,249 motorcycles were newly registered, in April 2017, however, there were only 13,574.

New motorcycle registrations in 2017 are distributed among the federal states in Germany. Bavaria is by far the craziest state for motorbikes.

The assumption that most motorcycles are newly registered in the most populous federal state is reasonable, but it is wrong: Bavaria, the second most populous federal state, is ahead of North Rhine-Westphalia with 18,022 registrations with 25,153 new registrations.

Market shares and top models from the manufacturers

The following manufacturers were able to gain market share in 2017 compared to the previous year: At BMW it is +4.7 percent, at Honda +1.1 percent, at Kawasaki +1.3 percent, at Ducati +0.3 percent, at Triumph +0, 7 percent and at Husqvarna +0.2 percent.

The most popular BMW is still the R 1200 GS. For years it has led almost every new motorcycle registration statistic. In 2017 as a whole, it came to 8,333 copies. The most successful Yamaha is the MT-07 (2nd place with 3,491 new registrations). The Z 650 is the most newly registered model from Kawasaki (3rd place with 2,657 new registrations). The Africa Twin is the most successful model at Honda (4th place with 2,562 new registrations). KTM occupies 5th place with the 690 Duke (2,299 new registrations), at Ducati the Scrambler is the volume model (12th place with 1,376 new registrations), Suzuki’s bestseller is the SV 650 (20th place with 1,141 new registrations). At Harley, the Forty Eight is the bike most in demand (27th place with 980 new registrations), the 701 Supermoto romps in 28th place with 970 registrations as the only Husqvarna and in 39th place in the motorcycle new registration statistics for 2017 as a whole, the first Triumph appears : the Bonneville Bobber with 746 new registrations.

Private and commercial new registrations

In our picture gallery you can see the complete top 50 of the most popular motorcycles in Germany from 2017. For each model, you not only find out how many models have been newly registered, but also how many specimens are newly registered to natural persons and how many to legal entities became.

According to the KBA, “natural persons” include all vehicle owners who register a vehicle on their person. The term “legal entities” means approvals for a trade or an association, for example dealer approvals, company motorcycles, driving school and rental motorcycles, police vehicles or the like – the lion’s share of this should go to motorcycle dealers. The vast majority of motorcycles in Germany are newly registered by private individuals: it was 78.4 percent in the previous year.
