In 2019, the total number of new two-wheeler registrations in Germany totaled 165,442 vehicles. In 2020, the statistics already reported 182,123 new registrations at the end of September. The delayed start of the season due to the Corona crisis is more than compensated for. The driving force could also be purchases brought forward, as the Euro 5 changeover at the end of the year will streamline the model range of many manufacturers.

In terms of motorcycles, 110,802 newly registered bikes ensure an increase of 7.9 percent compared to the previous year. Light motorcycles are developing into a real boom segment. 28,255 new registrations mean an unbelievable increase of 63.5 percent compared to 2019. Many people who switch to cars will find themselves here who want to enjoy the spirit of two-wheelers with the new B196 license. The big scooters are developing against the trend. With 14,531 new registrations, this segment is 3.1 percent below the previous year. Light scooters, on the other hand, increased by 93.3 percent and reached 23,815 new registrations in 2020.

BMW dominates the market

BMW

BMW remains absolutely dominant in the German market. In the year to date, Bavaria has achieved a market share of 20.9 percent with 23,189 new registrations. Kawasaki ranks second with 13,433 new registrations and a market share of 12.1 percent. Slightly behind, KTM is already following with 12 percent of the cake and 13,263 new registrations. The Austrians are on par with Honda except for a new registration (13,262 / 12%). Fifth place goes to Yamaha with 11,158 new registrations and 10.1 percent. Harley-Davidson (9,235 / 8.3%) is ahead of Suzuki (5,287 / 4.8%) and Triumph (5,138 / 4.6%). Ducati, Husqvarna, Royal Enfield, Indian, Moto Guzzi and Aprilia follow on the other ranks.

As usual, BMW dominates the bestsellers in September with the GS. Altogether there are even five models from Bavaria in the top 20. KTM can place four models, Suzuki and Honda three, Yamaha two. The KTM 390 was able to place itself behind the GS. The Kawasaki Z 650 was brought up to third place, the Suzuki SV 650 even took fifth place, its Enduro sister V-Strom 650 came in 14th. Newly placed in the top 20 are the BMW models S 1000 XR and R 18. The XR, however, has an extremely high proportion of commercial approvals. Such figures are not yet available for the R 18. One can assume, however, that most of the new registrations also go to demonstrators.

Conclusion

Despite Corona – the fascination of motorcycles continues and gives manufacturers record sales figures in Germany. The 125 class is a particularly booming segment.
