Yamaha takes on the World Cup
In addition to the new R1, the Yamaha 2006 novelties program includes the evolution of the R6, FJR1300, Fazer 1000 and Tmax but also the arrival of new models such as the eagerly awaited MT-03 and the Xmax scooter. Discovery.
After Kawasaki (read, it’s Yamaha’s turn to reveal its new 2006 models which will take pride of place in a few days on the podiums of the Paris Motor Show (read our).
There are already proven models like the R6, the FJR1300, the Fazer 1000 or the Tmax, but also new borns like the MT-03 and the Xmax scooter..
The MT-03: 660cc of MT-01
Yamaha will present to the world the eagerly awaited MT-03, little sister of the no less awaited – in its time – MT-01 (read and).
The newcomer will have the difficult task of allowing those who fantasize about the big Yamaha twin with Kodo rhythms without being able to afford it (13,250 € all the same!) To live part of their dream at almost half the price … To achieve this, Yamaha has focused more on preserving the spirit of the machine and not on its mechanical configuration in the strict sense….
The MT-03 will not have like its predecessor a big twin but will receive the mono of the XT 660 (read) in a relatively close version since it will develop 45 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 56.2 Nm at 5,250 rpm mn for the MT-03, instead of 48 hp and 58.4 Nm at the same speeds for the supermotard … The difference will perhaps be in the progressiveness of the arrival of power or in the presence of torque from the first laps, even if the spirit of the MT-03 was already in gestation in the availability at low speeds and the sympathetic rumble of the XT660 !
In terms of the cycle part, the reflection of Yamaha engineers led to the same conclusion as at Kawasaki: what is the point of complicating your life when you can keep it simple! Thus, the rear suspension directly links the swingarm to the frame and if the MT-01 can play with its colossal V-Twin to make its line unique and recognizable at first glance, the MT-03 does not benefit from the same. advantageous mechanics and tries to entice the biker by means of its red shock absorber.
Despite this, the MT-03 has two characteristics that unmistakably link it to its big sister: its front optic and its two large matt black pots placed under the saddle..
The future queen of Supersport ?
On the sporting side, the Yamaha R6 intends to erase the slap inflicted by Honda this year in Supersport … with nine victories for the world number one against zero for the brand in tuning forks (read). Yam therefore decided – and we are starting to get used to it in the sports sector! – to radicalize the racehorse…
In appearance, the new 600 differs from the old one by its sharper lines. The air intake is enlarged and above it sits a night light which gives it a boil of its own, although the optics are reminiscent of those of the first version of the R1. The fairing benefits from numerous ventilations with an aggressive rendering but remains marred by the presence of "Mobylette Touch" indicators..
If the R6 still does not give in to the fashion of the pot under the saddle, it shortens it considerably in any case (like Rossi’s M1). Finally, the saddle support does not escape the facelift and its extreme finesse (see the absence of rear footrest in the photos) may upset passengers, even the most reckless….
In terms of sensations, we naturally expect an avalanche of horses, torque, RPMs and other angles. The engine has therefore been rebored (67 x 42.5 mm against 65.5 x 44.5 mm previously) and the swingarm now in banana seems even stronger than before. General Seb and his Honda CBR600 have better watch out…
FJR1300: Kilometrator
On the tourism side, the FJR, a real asphalt devourer, has undergone some changes compared to last year: the sides and the fork crown have been redesigned, the passenger footrest plates modified, the brake calipers replaced by Nissins and the wheelbase increased by 4.5 cm.
The beast sees its weight increase by 13 kg while its engine remains the same: valiant at will !
The Fazer 1000 gets a makeover !
Side Fazer, the big roadster had not undergone serious modifications since its launch in 2002. It is now done, and well done besides. !
First of all, the Fazer 1000 inherits the new engine block of the R1 2004, thus increasing its power: 150 hp announced … outside France, of course. In order not to be overtaken by this deluge of horses, the tubular steel frame gives way to a cast aluminum frame of the most beautiful effect, while to stop the cavalry the brakes gain 20 mm.
As on the R6, the pot is shortened. Its large volume also forced the engineers to make a straight part of the swing arm in the shape of a banana. And like the new R1 (read), the new – inverted – Fazer’s fork is gold anodized. More sporty, the Fazer 1000 ?
The roadster also gains in stature: large gray engine block that stands out from the large black frame, large gold inverted fork and large pot! Even the rear tire goes from 180 to 190 mm! But do men really prefer fat ones ?
The Xmax 125, after Majesty
Although the new Xmax and the old Majesty continue to coexist in 2006, the passing of witnesses remains important because the challenge is great: the Majesty is the best-selling scooter in France during the first half of 2005 (read) !
In an elegant and unabashed style, the Xmax prepares to compete with the Piaggio X8 and X9, Suzuki Burgman, MBK Skyliner, Kymco Dink and other Peugeot Elystar. A fierce struggle for which the new tuning fork scooter comes with a 14 hp Euro 3 4-stroke mono, large wheels (14 ” at the front and 15 "at the rear), a wide apron, a relatively high bubble and a trunk that can – according to Yamaha – accommodate two full face helmets.
The Tmax "plus"
A special version of the TMax will be available in 2006: the Tmax Black Max. On the program: specific paint, matt finish frame, brake calipers painted red, exclusive two-tone upholstery, specific design of the dashboard and polished rim sides "for a very sporty look".
When will a livery "50th anniversary"and"Rossi Replica"of the powerful Yam scooter ?
