This time, BMW took advantage of the Wheels & Waves festival, a gathering of motorcycle, surf and beach enthusiasts in Biarritz (64), from June 11 to 14, to unveil "its interpretation of a Scrambler" based on R nineT with the Path 22 concept.

Recalling that "the first Scramblers of the 1950s were modified road, suitable for off-road trips with studded tires, increased travel and a high exhaust", BMW chose to decline its R nineT because it is "an ideal base to be transformed into a Scrambler ", considers the chief designer of the German manufacturer, Edgar Heinrich.

Southsiders MC, Ornamental Conifer, Dyer Brand…

To go tickle on "their" Scrambler ground, BMW has enlisted the services of the Southsiders MC motorcycle club (Vincent Prat, Jerôme Alle, Frederic Antoine, Benoit Guerry, Thierry de Miras and Julien Aze), from the artist Ornamental Conifer and the Californian board manufacturer Dyer Brand to give shape to this Concept Path 22, named after a surf spot on the Basque coast "inaccessible by car"…

"The BMW Concept Path 22 is synonymous with freedom", says Ola Stenegard, Head of Motorcycle Design at BMW Motorrad: "The Concept Path 22 is based on the R nineT which is for us the very embodiment of a custom motorcycle. he idea of a Scrambler is not new to us and we thought the time had come to present our interpretation of this legendary motorcycle concept ".

The Concept Path 22 naturally retains the R nineT’s flat twin and cardan shaft drive, single-sided swingarm and classic round headlight, but adds distinctive Scrambler-like elements like studded tires, a larger front wheel, slightly larger deflections and an exhaust in high position (optional on the R nineT).

Other "vintage" elements complete the picture such as the bellows on the front fork or the protective grille of the headlight, a topstitched leather saddle, leather-wrapped handles, an Akrapovic silencer (optional on the R nineT), etc.

Surf rack

But the most original element is undoubtedly the surfboard holder placed on the right side of the bike, "specially developed by BMW Motorrad" in aluminum profiles and leather, modular to adapt to boards of different dimensions . It can also be folded into the silhouette of the motorcycle or can be dismantled "in a jiffy".

Note also the indicators integrated into the ends of the handlebars, the milled aluminum wheels ("unique parts manufactured exclusively by BMW Motorrad", specifies the manufacturer), the Roland Sands Design (RSD) parts or the minimalist dashboard.

And finally, even if it is only a concept, let us remind the impatient ones that the R nineT itself had started its career, during the Villa d’Este elegance competition … To be continued on MNC : stay connected !
