News - Style study and new roadster: BMW surprises in Italy! - F800R: the third roadster

After its national show in Cologne, where the new 1300 series and the S1000RR caused a sensation, BMW arrives in Milan with two new surprises: a roadster version of the F800 series and a concept both enticing and surprising, called Lo Rider.

F800R: the third roadster

Inaugurated in 2006, the F800 series had so far four versions: the F800S with a "soft" sport vocation, the F800 ST with more road-going pretensions and the recent F800GS and F650GS tested by Site last spring (read the test).

Sharing the same engine architecture – a vertical twin with eight valves of 798cc – the F800R comes today to enrich this offer which BMW defines as "belonging to the mid-range basics segment". If the term" basic "will certainly please owners who have spent 8,000 to nearly 10,000 € to acquire it, the objective is clear, clear and precise: to canvass new customers with more means. modest, in order to make them discover the range via simple and relatively accessible motorcycles.

Thanks to its engine delivering 87 hp at nearly 8,000 rpm and above all a torque of 86 Nm at 6,000 rpm, the F800R series is indeed a good appetizer for the proven capabilities of the largest displacement of the Bavarian manufacturer. Joining the R1200R and the K1300R – whose look clearly inspired the F800R – within the "roadster" offer of the BMW range, the F800R is based on a low weight (182 kg dry and 204 kg full made according to the manufacturer) and on a "simple" cycle part with regard to the usual particularities of the sign.

Thus, the "little" Teutonic roadster in the eye, say … particular, is suspended by a traditional telescopic fork 43 mm in non-adjustable diameter and a double swingarm in cast light alloy, adjustable in preload and rebound. A steering damper is responsible for curbing any parasitic reactions from the rigid aluminum frame, while the F800S’s pretty light alloy spoke wheels (120/70/17 up front and 18/55/17 in the front ‘rear) are renewed, as well as their ultra practical side valves.

On the braking side, in addition to the ABS option, the sensitivity of which has been further revised, the driver will be able to rely on two 320 mm steel discs and Brembo four-piston calipers at the front and on the single-piston floating caliper clamping a 265 mm disc at the rear. Serious equipment, reinforced by the presence of "aviat" hoses, which demonstrate that if BMW is ready to expand its target, this will not be at the expense of safety !

Neophytes will also appreciate the presence of "traditional" commodos – released on the K1300 series in Cologne -, which BMW justifies as allowing "to integrate twice as many functions as in the past without increasing the number of contactors". A slight disavowal after decades of separate orders, but which the manufacturer largely assumes:"it is about adapting to customer demand, BMW France simply explains.

Still in the chapter "Life on board", the saddle of the F800R has been slightly lowered (800 mm all the same!) And an option low saddle of 775 mm or saddle raised by 825 mm is available in the consequent catalog of options. The cockpit uses analog instruments to inform the pilot and its dials are redesigned to match the more dynamic look of the F800R.
