The Yamaha FJR1300 rise in rank in 2013
The standard and automatic Yamaha FJR1300s underwent profound changes in 2013, aesthetic but also – above all – electronic. Throttle control, engine mapping, traction, speed, even suspensions: everything is now under control !

A few days ago finally, we learned by a more secret way that the FJR1300 would be the subject of an update for next year (read)…
However, the information is now directly confirmed by the Iwata firm, which is exhibiting from today at the Intermot show in Cologne the brand new version of its large road, the FJR 1300, in the presence of Jorge Lorenzo himself. On the 2013 GT program: "sharper styling, more precise control, more powerful features"summarizes the manufacturer.
The photos in the Akrapovic catalog had already made it possible to glimpse part of the new fairing and to note the presence of a more imposing windshield. The latter would limit air pressure and turbulence thanks to its new shape and new air inlets and outlets.
Simpler in design, the new electric bubble moves faster – "twice as fast", according to the Japanese engineers – and keeps its position when the engine is stopped. The fairing is also intended to be more protective, and simpler since"the adjustable lower fairing panel has been modified so that it can be adjusted without tools", underlines Yam ‘.
Naturally, the FJR takes advantage of this makeover to swap its old turn signal bulbs for LEDs. The new front double optic also receives a series of electroluminescent diodes and gives a facelift to the "thirteen-hundred", whose displacement does not move…
The 1298 cc 4-cylinder, on the other hand, receives the YCC-T system ("Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle" or electronic throttle opening control) which takes care of the intermediary between the pilot and the throttle valve. Thanks to it, the "overall" power would be increased by 2 kW (approximately 2.7 hp).
During this electronic transplant, the engine also received new injection bodies and a new exhaust system " whose internal components have been redesigned, the length has been increased and the end caps modernized"to optimize, again, the overall performance of the FJR.
"By helping the engine run smoothly, the new intake and exhaust systems have reduced the number of catalysts in the exhaust system, which now has two instead of four. In addition to weight savings, the reduction in the number of catalysts required by the regulations on gas emissions helps to combat the shortage of rare metals, welcomes at the same time Yamaha.

Asked by Site on the Yamaha stand at the Cologne Intermot Show, the big boss of Yamaha Motor France confirmed to us that the new FJR 1300s would arrive in dealerships "end of October 2012 for the standard version and end of December for the ABS version".

Last mechanical modification finally: "For the first time, the FJR engine block features jacketed cylinders coated with a ceramic plating, whose design is reminiscent of that used successfully on the supersport models YZF-R1 and YZF-R6", describe the Japanese.
"Instead of using traditional liner or liners crimped into the alloy cylinder block", they specify,"the new system consists of applying the treatment directly to the alloy of the block. It has the main advantage of improving heat dissipation, to ensure the powerful and smooth operation of the motor.".
Installed last year on the R1 – but inaugurated on the Super Tenere in 2010! -, the TCS ("Traction Control System", no translation needed!) makes its appearance on the new FJR1300: "a notable improvement (…) which will certainly please riders using their motorcycle all year round, in all weathers".
Likewise, the Yamaha GT will be fitted as standard in 2013 with the in-house D-Mode system allowing to juggle between two engine maps – a more progressive "T" version and a sportier "S" version – and a cruise control. , very useful nowadays !
The automatic version of the FJR – the "FJR1300AS" – sees the operation of its YCC-S system improved: "The latest generation electronic system promotes faster and smoother gear changes, allowing more enjoyable sporting use".
In addition, a new function called "Stop mode" automatically downshifts the FJR to first gear when it stops after driving at walking pace. "It is particularly suitable for incessant starts and stops when driving in town, at crossroads or in traffic jams", assures the manufacturer.
In terms of chassis too, the FJR1300AS is particularly spoiled! Indeed, the automatic version of the road Yamaha welcomes in 2013 suspensions with electronic adjustment !
"Using a button on the handlebars, the driver can choose between the following settings: "One-Up", "One-Up with Luggage" (with luggage, Editor’s note), "Two-Up" or "Two-Up with Luggage"", details Yamaha."In addition to these four main settings, "Soft", "Standard" and "Hard" damping can be specified for each setting.".
So in total "Yamaha offers twelve suspension tuning options !", the Blues themselves are surprised !
For this, the automatic FJR had to acquire a new inverted fork including "the compression mechanism is contained in the left fork, while the rebound mechanism is provided by the right fork, a system that has already proven its worth on the YZF-R1".
"It is essential that the functions of relaxation and damping are dissociated", insists the manufacturer,"because the separation of hydraulic fluids allows the system to offer a wider range of damping settings".
The "short" FJR1300A version – beware this "A" is the version with manual gearbox … – for its part, it must be satisfied with new front fork components and optimized rear suspension settings.
Both versions also receive new commodos, a new composite instrument panel "a digital counter in the center, an analog tachometer on the left and a multi-function dot matrix screen on the right", a new upholstery of the saddle sides, new separate tail lights and new footrests.
So much irrefutable proof that proves that "Yamaha engineers have scrutinized the design and functions of every aspect of the 2013 FJR models" !
Even the center stand has been changed, "for greater ease of use and convenience", assure Iwata officials."Indeed, the lever arm and the position of the pivots have undergone modifications.". According to their learned calculations:"placing the motorcycle on the center stand represents an energy saving of 30%".
"Like the previous models, the latest version of the FJR1300A and FJR1300AS will be equipped with standard side panniers in color matched to the bike.", concludes Yamaha. It is to highlight that "the side bags and the 50 liter top case are separate products and (that) Yamaha recommends not to install or use them at the same time".
Finally, Yamaha plans to market the FJR1300AS in France in two colors: "Magnetic Bronze" and "Midnight Black". The "A" version with the manual gearbox will benefit from a third shade: "Frosted Blade" (gray).
